I tend to sympathize with your sentiment,  but the reality is that USA and Australia are long term allies,  we are dependent on the USA for military security in the broader strategic sense. 

China is becoming more aggressive in recent times, and we need strong allies.

China already uses underwater drones. Submarines main purpose is to surveil in stealth. Weapons to defend itself or launch surprise attacks. Underwater drones can move in stealth. America can land a nuke anywhere in the world in around 30 minutes. Attack is best done by overhead drones

Australia pays many billions of dollars for a dozen submarines. How large is our coast line? You would need hundreds to do proper surveillance and to get anywhere you need as soon as you need to.

But we current have 6, bordering on 30 years old and don't even have the manpower to crew them all. So why buy another dozen when we can't efficiently crew 6?

A country like Australia? Subs are stupid. Too large coast line and too few people in the military to even crew the vessels. A country like North Korea? They have a small coast line, huge military and so can have their 100 submarines lol

Seriously WTF? Taiwan is the flashpoint he says. Well we all know President Xi wants to wrap up the issue of Taiwan and he's old so will want to resolve it in less than 20 years and Australia has kindly painted a target on itself.

I guess Potato Head hasn't learned you keep your friends close and enemies closer. It would have been better if China thought we were neutral like before. Instead, China is a tiger in the cage that we keep poking to impress our overseas friends how cool we are. And we fail to see that cage door is opened...

It's a much more difficult journey from Haiti to Texas unless they got on a plane, or a nice boat. They can make it to Florida more easily (even on a small fishing type boat). I just wonder if they were taken to Mexico, or if they took a boat over and then walked to the border. It's also not that far from Haiti to Cancun, but then the overland part is pretty far, I guess they could have taken a boat along the coast for a ways before walking to the border. idk, I just think it's weird.
