Not much more to add, but here is the alledged email...

Going forward, to build a breakthrough Twitter 2.0 and succeed in an increasingly competitive world, we will need to be extremely hardcore. This will mean working long hours at high intensity. Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade.

Twitter will also be much more engineering-driven. Design and product management will still be very important and report to me, but those writing great code will constitute the majority of our team and have the greatest sway. At its heart, Twitter is a software and servers company, so I think this makes sense.

If you are sure that you want to be part of the new Twitter, please click yes on the link below:

[Google form link]

Anyone who has not done so by 5pm ET tomorrow (Thursday) will receive three months of severance.

Whatever decision you make, thank you for your efforts to make Twitter successful.

How to crush work ethic and workers respect for your organsation in one simple email. Yet another fuck up by Elon - had he done his research, before pressing 'send' he would have seen his email is the exact opposite of what the research and data says he wants to achieve. I guarantee none of the remaining Twitter employees will be going to work happy and many of them would be actively seeking employment elsewhere. The death spiral inches ever closer to the shit in the dunny

Maybe he just wants a weekly office orgy?

He's come up with a brilliant plan. Have his employees sign a pledge that they're going to work insane unpaid overtime or get fired! And they'll definitely do it because who doesn't want to work for an insane boss an extra 40 hours a week for free.

Boom! Your move, libtards.
He has done this both at SpaceX and Tesla multiple times. His has been very vocal that he is not impressed at the talent at twitter. The goal is to get rid of most of the staff and only keep the guys willing to do his bidding.
I dont see how this wont actually work.
If you move fast enough, everything appears flat

Because there was an existing culture at Twitter he has upended. The culture at SpaceX and Tesla were his way from the start.

Musk doesn't exactly have the reputation he once had. And giving Twitter looks to be in a death spiral - it's not exactly going to 'attract' new talent. Elon would be better tasked ensuring those that are still there feel good to work there.

Crushing work ethic and respect for the business is not the way forward to success. I've had shitty managers in my day. It resulted in having zero care for the job or success of the workplace. I left as soon as I had the chance. Also the IT industry is not exactly hard to get into.

Elon Musk needs these workers a hell of a lot more than they need him

SpaceX and Tesla are celebrity companies.  Lots of people want to work there and that makes it easy to abuse their employees in ways that they wouldn't normally tolerate.

I don't know if the same is true for Twitter.  Maybe I can't see past my own bias here but rockets and fast cars are way cooler than a social media website.

But maybe it'll work.  I'm very curious to see if this "hardcore mode" includes paid overtime.

There was an existing culture at Twitter before the current one upended it, too. Jack envisioned Twitter as a place for free speech. Then they hired a bunch of DEI types and all that went to shit.

I don't know if Elon can pull it off, but I think most companies would be better off without the words are violence people running them.

I get that a forum of free speech is a noble ideal. But it's apparent since the dawn of man that humanity can't behave without some restraint. Twitter, from the onset, quickly became a cesspool of "free speech", e,g., hostile, misinformation, etc.. Advertisers became troubled, profits fell.

Ideals aside, Twitter is a for profit company and always has been.

Okay, but Twitter was losing millions before Elon took over. This is why I don't get it when people blame it all on Elon. The site has been garbage for years. When the safe space weirdos took over, they just allowed a different group of people to have free speech, to be hostile, and to spread dubious information.

Okay, but Twitter was losing millions before Elon took over.

Which begs the question: Why the fuck did he want to take over? Why pay an over inflated price? And why can't he STFU so as not make his primary source of revenue (advertisers) uneasy?

And how did he not foresee car companies pulling out given he owns and is a famous face of a rival car brand.

To all and sundry he's coming off as a major dickwad. I'm sure the reality of the $44 billion 'investment' is starting to sink in

Remember none of his workers need Twitter to succeed more than him. Being a major dickwad of a boss who clearly has no fucken idea of what he's doing or a comprehensible plan moving forward while Twitter loses even more money than before he took over is not doing him any favours

Good luck to him because luck is the only thing that will save his 'investment' at this point. I didn't spend a dollar for that steaming pile of shit so idgaf what happens

Fair point. But it's not just the safe space weirdos that caused all the problems. A lot of unsafe space weirdos were equally culpable. Chicken-egg, unsure.

If I were playing werepenguin, and there was a list of topics and a set narrative on those topics that the werepenguins had to adhere to. If I were a werepenguin, I would rather remain silent in most cases than to push those topics and narratives the werepenguins were required to push.

With competent inspectors, if the werepenguins were overly vocal, the werepenguins would be easy to spot.

I wouldn't call the engineering teams or the team behind maintaining Twitter’s core system libraries, part of the 'fat'. They have essentially all resigned.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-11-18/twitter-employees-locked-out-musk-ultimatum/101670710

If a CEO wants to shake things up, they need a plan. Elon clearly is making it up as he goes. How do you think Twitter can recover from this death spiral? If he cant recover the staff he has lost I give it a few weeks max before the towel is thrown. Without the staff, there is no product and it's barely a skeleton crew at this point. You cant have entire engineering teams quit and think to yourself 'well at least I saved money on paying salaries!'

More advertisers (of which Elon has said he is not a fan of as he wants it to operate as a subscription model) are going to walk when they see that Twitter is untrustworthy and unreliable and he needs to be making over $1 billion a year just to pay back the interest - no way he can make that on subscriptions alone

It didn't take $44 billion dollars to create Twitter. Elon could have started his Twitter-like app. He has enough money that he could have poached the talented and best Twitter devs to work for him instead. Instead he chose to overpay and spend $44 billion on an already sinking ship and then without a plan - just fuck it up.

Elon used to be synonymous with cool. Apparently he still thinks that's the case. Nope!

Anyway, you tell me what way Elon could get himself out of this hole and restore Twitter to glory and profit? Do you believe it can still be done?

Out of 7500 employees at twitter before Elon took over there are now somewhere between 2000 to 2500 left.

Surely twitter couldn't possibly have had 70% dead weight?

This seems to have a lot of twitter publishers spooked.  I see several that are making alternate accounts on Mastadon and Telegram just in case twitter becomes unreliable.

I dont have Twitter or post any 'tweet' like crap from any app. I dont feel as if my 'free speech' is neutered.

I certainly dont need a megalomaniac to waste his money on a dumpster fire of an app to feel better either. I feel nothing

But inside, I'm laughing a little as these companies burn. Meta, Facebook, Twitter etc. All losing relevance (and their CEOs a fuckton of money) ;D

Twitter is a dead simple site.

Discord, which is VASTLY more feature rich has an entire team of 750 people

YouTube has 2800 people

Reddit has 700

TikTok 700

WTF is twitter doing with 7500 people?

How is it in anyway conceivable that they have more people than YouTube working on a app that allows people to send short messages?

How many engineers are there tunning TFES? 1000? 10 000? Heck, we can even send messages longer than 300 characters here?

They need probably around 300 Engineers. An accounting department of about 50 people. And a massive team of content and PR moderation. 2000 people is a LOT of people to run a frikken website that does so little.

Entirely true. Advertisers could give less than a shit about content as long as they have eyeballs. It’s only when someone calls them on it that they run away with their hair on fire because of “brand erosion”.

The ones crying the most about the possibility of free speech on Twitter are the ones who have been controlling the narrative. The same people who made fun of people for objecting to being banned for expressing (sometimes completely normal) opinions, and saying it's a private company they can do what they want are the ones complaining the most that this private company is changing its rules. They only care about free speech when they're the ones allowed to have it.

I’d say yes and no. There are people like me that believe that a Twitter can make their own rules regarding speech. It’s a for profit company and they will and can do whatever they want to remain so.
As well I believe, actually don’t care, what content they allow or disallow. (Misinformation is the slippery of slopes, tho)
I’m in the Neil Young camp: he didn’t cotton to rogans podcasts, so he pulled his music from Spotify. Did he want or expect others to follow him? No. He just didn’t want to personally be associated with the platform. That’s my attitude - a platform can do whatever it wants, if I don’t like it, i don’t partake.

Arbitrarily slashing the workforce by half and then giving the remainder an ultimatum after upending the workplace culture is stupid

Most companies would wait a few months so they can get a feel for the business and how it's run and then target the redundancies. Elon risks a massive 'brain drain' as staff mass fired/resign

Entire engineering teams are gone. Who is going to replace them? It's not like Elon is merging a company and has his own preferred team ready to go - even then you would usually wait a bit so there can be an orderly hand over.... To simply slash that much and not give a fuck about who is left after his ultimatum shows an abject lack of respect for the company he just sunk $44 billion (+interest) on

The only reason I am glad Elon might change things, is because I don't like the crowd that are crying the most about Elon. It's entirely petty, I suppose. lol
I'm sorry. Am I to understand that when you have a boner you like to imagine punching the shit out of Tom Bishop? That's disgusting.

This is all probably true. So why has he paid $44B for it?
