A Simple Question
« on: April 12, 2014, 06:32:02 PM »
Hello, I am new to the forums, but I have always been aware of the existence of the Flat Earth Society and its beliefs. I have grown up believing in a round earth and everything I've learned up to this day would seem to support that theory. However, I realize that listing all the evidence that supports a round earth model is futile because the facts tend to get lost in a sea of words and technical jargon. So instead, I will ask one question:

Why do planes fly along curved paths on a map?

If someone is able to give me a scientific answer backed up by notable sources and experiments, I will absolutely consider the flat earth model as potentially a viable model for the earth. However, I also expect this person to accept the burden of proof for their claim. The round earth model is "extremely" well established in the scientific community and appears to correctly fit all our scientific models. It is an accepted theory, like it or not, and therefore it is up to the challengers of this theory to accept the burden of proof, or to at least prove why the round earth model can't be satisfactorily demonstrated to be correct. In this case, since I am looking for specific proof of the flat earth model, it is up to a flat earth believer to accept the burden of proof.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to a thoughtful discussion.

Planes fly using navigational aids.  Take a look at our flat map and imagine someone flying West.  They would be making an arc.

Why would anyone want to fly 'west'?  They would take the shortest route. And that route on the claimed fe map does not fit with reality.

They fly west when they circumnavigate the globe, don't they?

Well, at least provide some sources about this please.

Are you saying that people don't go west when the have circumnavigated the Earth?

Are you asking why anyone would circumnavigate the Earth?  Are you really dumb, or are you just messing with me?

Planes fly a great circle, not as shown on your flat earth map.  They fly in a straight line, which is curved when drawn on a map, depending on the projection, as you know.

His question seemed clear. The shortest distance around a sphere is a great circle but the shortest distance on a flat earth is a simple straight line. Most map projections make most great circles (and therefore flight paths) appear as arcs. The question, if it's still unclear was: why would this artefact of spherical projection mapping exist at all if the ground was actually flat? A simple flat map would exist without ever encountering this -or many other- problems.

Here is a list of people that have circumnavigated the earth.

Hi There,

Please read the below thread where I asked pretty much the same question. You'll see that the society cannot provide credible answers. This is because Samuel Rowbotham hadn't been on any long distance air travel.

Enjoy!
