The Lounge / Greetings and etc.
« on: June 03, 2011, 10:05:46 AM »
As so many other older members have been doing as of late, I'm back. I've also found a new and permanent place with new and permanent internet. So, what have I missed? Who's still here? Who should I prepare to battle? And where the hell are my pants?

As some of you have perhaps noticed, real life has seriously conflicted with my posting/lurking frequency here. For this, I am sorry, promise. Not too worry though, I'm not dead yet. Hope you've all been well and that I haven't missed too many lulz 'round here.

Some of you may have already heard of him already (perhaps even made a previous thread, I can't be bothered to look) but for those of you who haven't, let me inform you. He's a photographer who's latest piece is a series of pictures called "In the Playroom" where he gets children to pose in ways that recreate headlines from the news (Terry , the 2004 tsunami, and even 9/11) the children were not abused in the making of the pictures, and in fact most had fun creating them. His intent was apparently to show that children are deeply affected by the news, whether we realize it as a society or not.  Here's a link to a gallery of the photos in question http://www2.macleans.ca/2010/09/16/the-kids-are-not-all-right-photo-gallery/39-lashes-by-jonathan-hobin-courtesy-of-the-dale-smith-gallery/

WARNING: SOME PEOPLE MAY BE OFFENDED BY THE PICTURES IN THE GALLERY

And so I put it to you, the incredibly biased, often intoxicated, and most likely insane, inhabitants of this forum to decide: are these photos offensive? If so, why? How far is too far in the name of art? Is this a statement or just a cheap gimmick?

You can make the sea turn purple
You can make the sea turn turtle
But you know you can never make me love you more
You can turn wine into water
Turn sadness into laughter
But you know you can never make me love you more

Let the stars fall down, let the leaves turn brown
So you know you can never make me love you more
Let the redwoods die, let the wells run dry
So you know you can never make me love you more

You can make the sea turn purple
You can make the sea turn turtle
But you know you can never make me love you more
You can turn wine into water
Turn sadness into laughter
But you know you can never make me love you more

Let the stars fall down, let the leaves turn brown
So you know you can never make me love you more
Let the redwoods die, let the wells run dry
So you know you can never make me love you more

Let the stars fall down, let the leaves turn brown
So you know you can never make me love you more
Let the redwoods die, let the wells run dry
So you know you can never make me love you more

I may not be able to post as frequently as I'd like, but don't say I never got you anything.

I don't like to use the words "U.S. interest". Thats why I wish other critics, friends of ours would stop saying, "we go into this country, we go into that country We do this, we do that". We don't do things, they do it to us
we are part of the victims, we aren't part of the victimizers.

And what's the purpose of it? Take Grenada for example. Capitalism would not collapse if Grenada remained revolutionary. And Reagan was right, it wasn't a matter of direct resources that you needed from that country. He said, "Nutmeg is not the question." I mean, that was Grenada's biggest export, we could get perfectly good nutmeg from Africa, you don't need Grenada's nutmeg. So why did they invade Grenada? They invaded Grenada because they were serving notice to the people of the Caribbean, and to the people of Latin America, and to the people of the world, that you cannot drop out of your client-state free-market system. That if you tried to take an independent source, and that if you use your land, your labour, your resources, and your capital, and your markets in a different way, in a collectivist way, if you use them to benefit the needs of your people, rather than to be milked like a cow for foreign investors, if you do that, this is what's going to happen to you.

This topic is inspired by an article I read earlier today.

http://news.uk.msn.com/world/articles.aspx?cp-documentid=152774380

So what are people's thoughts? If someone wants to die, should there be a legal way for them to do so. If so, then why? If not, then why not?

N.B. For these intents and purposes, we're talking about people who have made the conscious effort themselves  (i.e. not someone in a coma's relatives saying what they "would have wanted") so any references to Terri Schiavo will be ignored.

Kiefer Sutherland has just lost a butt load of money. Looks like he can save the world, but he can't protect himself from con artists.

I recently had the opportunity to do an interview with a musician by the name of Matt Dusk (sort of like a Frank Sinatra crooner sort of guy) and it's going to be published this week. Just curious if there would be any interest in me posting this after it hits the presses? If not, that's alright, we'll consider this thread just me bragging.

Arts & Entertainment / Lyric Discussion
« on: January 12, 2010, 04:13:30 PM »
I was about to spam C.N with more music lyrics when it dawned on me: I generally post lyrics here because I like them, so why not get some discussion going? We all have lyrics we love, so post them here, but provide a reason why, and we'll see what others think. The only thing I ask is that we refrain from mud-slinging in regards to the musical tastes of others, in the interest of encouraging participation. If no one posts any, I'll post mine in a bit, but I'm interested in others' for the moment

My roommate/landlord is trying to design a website for his new business, but has no idea how to go about doing this (and nor do I, I'm sad to admit). If any of you lot have any experience doing this and wish to gain some experience and you want to shoot me a PM, then that'd be wicked. Conversely, if you know anyone who would be interested in doing this you can PM me as well. I've asked a few of my friends, but I figure, if anyone would be interested in a project like this, it'd be a group of super nerds like you all.

Also, inb4 gb2craigslist, etc.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8321967.stm

When I first read the headline of this article I thought that it would be an uplifting story about the rich giving back to the poor. Instead, I found it to be more about the apathy the rich have towards charity. What are other peoples' thoughts on this?

The Lounge / A question for CR90
« on: October 12, 2009, 12:14:19 AM »
Since you abandoned the last thread about this topic, I figured I would make a new one in the appropriate section in hopes that I can get an answer from you.

Well, if that's the case, I'd like the full story. In the interest of discussion of course.

I posted what I could remember, it's been six months.

So, if I understand correctly, you asked god to change your sister's fillings to gold and he happily obliged while the same Christian prays for food in Africa and ends up dying of dysentery?   What is it that you do to curry God's favour so well? Not trolling, I'm legitimately curious, as you are clearly the model of a perfect Christian (because God only listens to the good ones, otherwise he would've killed all the gays the Westboro Baptist Church claims he hates and pray for him to smite).  Either that or you were praying for something else and God decided "fuck it, that broad needs some gold in her mouth". In which case, what kind of a God would do that?

And before you say that you can't remember the details of what happened, let me remind you they are irrelevant to my question, I'm merely asking what makes your family better Christians than the rest.

Just curious what people's thoughts are on this. Who do people feel is right? Is the property management company right in wanting the flag displayed "properly"? Does that even matter?

In short, discuss.

Alright, before you all start with the derailment please note: THIS IS NOT A TROLL, NOR IS IT FOR LULZ

I've been (briefly) talking with Daniel about doing a(nother) Newspaper article on TFES. As such, I need assistance. In order to get the full story on FET (history, experiments, etc) and its place in modern society, I need those of you who are proponents of FE, as well as a small sampling of those of you who are here for the lulz (older members only please) to give me a short interview (medium to be discussed based on location). If this seems like something you'd be into, PM me by Friday and I can supply you with more information, and if not, disregard this thread entirely. Thanks in advance
