Just before covid came she had a problem we took her to the doctor who was worried enough to give us a letter for the hospital, who did scans, blood tests and an examination to find she had cervical cancer, within two months she had surgery and radiotherapy and now (touchwood) she is okay,and all it cost was the parking at the hospital.

She also has macular degeneration, has to go to the hospital every two months for injections to slow it down, costs nothing. We do not get people here having to refuse treatment because of costs, ever.

At the end of the financial year when I get a few thousand dollars back in tax I get a few hundred dollars less than I would otherwise have gotten if Medicare didn't exist. Wiw

So basically for the grand total a few hundred dollars I get unlimited emergency hospital care for free. Nothing to pay for the care, the bed, the drugs, the doctors, the operations bar the few hundred I got less in the tax return

Part of the issie is the cost of becomming a doctor: medical school is expensive as hell and there is no help.
Like, you would think the government would happily pay for you to be a doctor since thet helps everyone but nope.  So the high loans pile up and demand doctors get paid alot to survvive.

Good luck to your mum, hope treatment continues to go well for her. I do miss the free at point of use NHS, health bills (still very cheap compared to US) suck here sometimes have to skip getting my inhaler because it costs too much. But experienced occupational healthcare for the first time this week and its fucking great and I don't have to pay a thing.
