Because we're highly paid disinfo agents on this forum.

I'm a new poster and interested in the topic. I am curious why there are so many who do not believe the idea of a flat earth on here when this forum should be for those who want to learn and discover more. Instead I find many posters shutting down discussion, much like paid disinfo agents on other forums, why is that?
This is a forum for discussion about the FE. It is not simply a forum for FEers to spread ideas unchallenged.

If you want that, there is the FE Q&A ( https://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php?board=12.0 ), where you can go and ask any question you want and see what the FE answer is, where you cannot challenge that answer or say there is something wrong with it.
There is the FE information repository ( https://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php?board=2.0 ), where you can find large compilations of heavily biased material promoting the FE, where the only comments from non-believers against the FE are the ones FEers or the like have chosen to quote, often to misrepresent them to pretend the RE arguments are flawed, and where they can repeat the same refuted claims without being challenged.
And there is the FE believers section ( https://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php?board=8.0 ), where you can find a place where FE believers are meant to discuss their ideas among other FEers, without any who don't believe interfering, so the only people to say something is wrong are other FEers.

But this forum is for everyone, including those who believe and those who don't, to discuss the FE.

And if you are interested in the idea of a FE, you shouldn't just be looking for those who are promoting it, you should also look for those who are arguing against it. You should look at both sides to see arguments for and against, and even better, you should try to find discussion between these sides, to see what arguments each side raise and how the other side responds.

The reason I am here is because I care about the truth, and will object to BS when I see it.
The ones spreading disinformation are the FEers.

As for "shutting down discussion", that is typically showing massive problems for the claims of FEers, to show they are wrong. That isn't shutting down a discussion, that is having a discussion. The FEers not being able to respond to justify their claims is on them.

You seem to be more interested in preaching than discussion.

Also, by "genuinely interested in the topic" do you mean the topic of Artemis, or FE?

I don't see anyone shutting down discussion.  I see people questioning and asking for proof and evidence.  If a flat earther actually showed evidence that stood up to questioning I would be amazed and in awe, and I promise you I would re-evaluate my beliefs.  So far, I have not seen any evidence or proof that stands up to examination, and common logic.  For me, I am here because I am fascinated as to how people can believe something so obviously wrong.  That is what I am trying to grasp.

Welcome to the forum, Contemplatius.

To answer your question, I, as a non flat earth believer am also here to learn. I like having my ideas challenged and in the process have learned more about the details of what I understood to be true and revealed misconceptions and gaps in some subjects I thought I knew fairly well. Trying to explain to others why something happens is often the best way to learn more about it. Further, many of us also want to make it known to visitors that the notion that the earth is flat is not as clear cut as some presume, and that "the earth is round" isn't merely something that is just taught to schoolchildren, parroted by scientists, and blindly accepted; there is actually stronger (overwhelming, actually) evidence that it is, in fact, true.

So far, I have seen nothing proposed as clear evidence that the earth is flat that either cannot also be explained by a large (in human terms) spherical earth (it's not "very curved" at the scale of even a dozen miles, so it's not as obvious as some think it "should" be, but it actually is curved and this can be measured if done carefully), or such claims can be shown conclusively to be wrong. So far. That could always change; whatcha got?

Moderators can effectively shut down a discussion. Ordinary posters, like most of us here - on both sides of the flat or non-flat argument - cannot. Often, the responses to posts claiming to be an effective challenge to the "round earth" idea are clear enough that no further discussion is warranted, effectively ending the topic. If you mean by "disinfo" that you think those answers are not correct, then let's hear some details why you think they are wrong. Be advised, however, that replies like "I don't believe that" without meaningful data to the contrary don't get very far.

Those who come here expecting to have their ideas simply accepted at face value are looking for affirmation, not knowledge. If that's what you want, read the Flat Earth Believers board. If you want to post there, you should request permission to do so. I don't know what criteria are used to decide such requests - a moderator could probably help you out there by PM.

Good luck, and enjoy your time here.

I think that has a lot to do with what attracts people to the site in the first place.

Many people in this thread for example, just like discussion based around the idea of a Flat Earth. I myself, am still confused on the whole issue. As I don't break the illusion of society down into "levels." Like some of the FE and RE do.
I just in general enjoy reading what others have to say on some issues.

For instance, in this thread, again for example. I know Stash made some excellent points about how faking CGI could be impossible. But, I still agree with sceptimatic in a way, because sure. I can agree there are always more questions. And a lot of subjects become slippery slopes when we talk about the "ramifications" on what a Flat Earth would mean on society as a whole.

I am a neutral party, but a interested observer, on both sides! Much like yourself!

Some are angry (both Flatties and Roundies) trying to force their conclusions, some others are just expressing opinions, and some are trying to point out the facts.

Do you want to KNOW the real shape of the Earth?
Or you want to BELIEVE it is flat?
I don't have to fight about anything.
These things are not about me.
When one points facts out, they speak for themselves.
The main goal in all that is simplicity.
