what is exactly the difference between a redneck and a hillbilly?

I've been wondering that for a very long time. Is it a geographical matter or are there other differences?

They are interchangeable for the most part...The moderate difference, a redneck is typically a farmer or in that type area. Name came from the hat they wear would typically not cover the back of their neck, so their neck is always red.

Hillbilly will more than likely have some sort of truck that is lifted but in shit condition...Or a motorcycle in shit condition with no title or plates. Typically perform low brow idiotic actions. Hillbillies is where the "Hey y'all, watch this!" Before they break an arm came from.

This are subtle differences, most other aspects everything is interchangeable

Well, I tend to think of a Redneck as a person who drives a truck, listens to country music, owns a fishing boat, usually has a pinch of chew between their check and gum. They also listen to rock of course, but it has to have wicked guitar riffs and a southern flair.

A hillbilly is a clan like society that live in the backwoods hills, their hair is usually long (unkempt of course), most of their music involves kitchen implements and they eat savory meals of possum and raccoon.

I fall somewhere in between the two but I can confess that my mother (rest her soul) lived in both a cave and a tent and didn't have anything above well water until she married my father.

Hillbillies are from the Appalachian Mountains and the Ozarks. They were descended from Scotch Irish immigrants, they were somewhat isolated from the rest of the US, since they lived in remote areas, and they retained a lot of the clannishness their ancestors brought with them. They became famous during Prohibition for making moonshine. They are also famous for their feuds (Hatfields and Mccoys), and their music, oh and I almost forgot flat foot dancing!



Jesco, the guy tap dancing on the table, burned his brains out huffing gasoline, but he was a great dancer.



This is D. Ray White (Jesco's father).  He was famous in his day.


A redneck might be a hillbilly, but they aren't the same thing.
