Yeah mobile gaming lost its appeal once they decided it was going to be about games that you can play for maybe 5-10 minutes at a time.  It used to be that mobile platforms were consoles in their own right, but the tendency is away from that.  That's why I like the PS vita, they seem determined to make more developed titles work in a world where 1 dollar apps dominate.  That being said I don't own a vita nor do I intend to purchase one.

Kairosoft make good game apps for I-phone. I don't think I've played a bad game by them really.

This is a shame. I'd like to make a game or two. I mean today I made a web browser that refused to work (works now damn thing) so I'm a long way off, but you seem to be able to import free game physics fairly easily. Maybe I'll make a flat earth game with Rowbotham and turtles.

Most small game producers (individuals I'm guessing here) just have no idea about what makes a 'good game'. The attention to gameplay, game physics, originality, graphics and sound are often terrible. And I'm not expecting big things on an I-device, just something that doesn't look like it was made for a high school projecct.
That said, I would possibly try a flat-earth game.

Even the DS is getting more gimiky.  I don't like the stylus, graphics, or the fact that pokemon has not changed significantly since blue or red.  The just keep adding more pokemon to the same idea that is blue or red.  I would by a DS for pokemon if they made something like megaman battle network be the way battles were fought.   pokemon on both sides two 3x3 grids to move around in, and 4 moves you could use to fight with.  It would take them some actual time and effort rather than something they could just spit out which is what every single game has been since the original.

But they have 3 games in the top 10 right now. That paper plane game where you just keep changing the angle and power you throw the plane made tons of money. Then consider Firaxis ported Sid Meiers Pirates which is a complete game in its own right with all the art work etc ... and no one bought it.



I've played that game. Its awesome. Kept me busy for 100 hours or more. I was bored of Angry birds before the free demo ran out.

I think people want a new game designed for the iPhone. Ha, thinking of a new game ... now that's tough.

I get the impression that if I copied Donkey Kong no one would buy it. If I invented Donkey Kong it would be top of the charts.

I bought Pirates for the PC and I also bought an Ipad version. It is a fairly good port but missing a few things. Overall, I really like the game but much prefer the PC version.
Also, that review was interesting in the ideas the guy came up with.

I actually just found an app I really like.

Its called SkyView and you look at the screen and the camera is on, but it overlays all the stars using your GPS location, the date, time and its gyroscopes. So even in the day you can see them, or indoors. But you can also line them up with what you see at night time. Then point at the star and it tells you what it is, how far away, whether its a satellite or a planet etc. I can also see stars 'through the earth' in constellations I would otherwise not see.

 

It moves as you move and it overlays all the stars around you. Inb4wretchedRErs asking about the mathematics.

One thing that annoys me is the review system on I-tunes. I accept that most reviews are written by 11 year olds who haven't grasped what really makes for a good review, however, simply writing, "awesome game" isn't helping the situation. You would think that while Itunes is scanning the unpublished reviews for swearing/hate speech etc they would also refuse to publish such shitty reviews. At the very least, send a message to the writer of the review that it is 'low content' posting!

Beorn, I'd never even used Obj-C a week ago. I am literally at the stage where if my code runs, I put down my cup of tea and perform a mini-mexican wave. If there is a bug, I look at the little red triangle and frown at it. >:(
I write NSLog commands into my code and use the built in debugger at the bottom of the console.

So I got mine finally. Love it.

Only qualm I have is the headphone jack placement, other than that no complaints. I have one of the fixed models, no stuck USB or scuffing/scratching occuring or a weird discolouring of the display, wifi issues, LTE issues. Everything works perfectly. Full 9 hours of battery life with moderate usage.
