Secondary education in England
« on: November 22, 2010, 04:11:31 PM »
What's it like, yo? What's a nice, mid-sized city with opportunities for good education and low tuition and living costs for foreigners?

She's asking about secondary education, not post-secondary.

Ya, but she was talking about tuition and living costs, which means that she is either looking into a charter school, (in which just signing up to be a foreign exchange student is cheaper anyways) or a university.

Just looking at some figures, I came up with this:

50th percentile tuition: £8,600/$13,700 per year (classroom-based, undergraduate)
Average living cost: £9,000/$14,350 per year

So around $28,000 per year. Not to mention other costs to actually get into the country, such as
medical insurance
travel insurance
student visa
baggage
travel
phone
television licence
et cetera

Wouldn't she need to know the language though? This is an American we are talking about, we only know American, nothing else. We aren't multi-lingual communists like the rest of you.

There's plenty of degree programs done entirely in English

lol wut.
Practically any European country provides cheaper education for non-EU citizens than America does for Americans.
Also, your living costs are about twice as much as they should be, and they include things you want her to include again.

television licence
Oh the no, £145!
Also, 50% discount for the blind.

being english secondary education, is there deprivation and institutional buggery, or is that reserved for the junior, more formative years?

Oh no, we maintain a high standard of institutional buggery throughout our education.

I know Spanish, but I doubt that would help much in Finland. :P

Also, Gayer, BEHBEH HOW IS? :D

i'm really confused. Isn't she a little old for secondary school?

I was going to say college/university, but the usage of those words is different in America and the UK.

To all, rather than discussion of education there in general, may I have some suggestions?

Hmm. Edinburgh is cheap and cool, so I gather, but it rains like a bitch up there.

I'm at Sheffield, which is a lovely city; it's a good uni as well.

I checked out Aston, which was pretty nice, but the SU was awful, compared to Sheffield's. (Officially the best in the UK, I believe)

Went to check out Leeds, kinda scummy city.

As PizzaPlanet about his.

I vote for Aston because I live around the corner and it's a good uni.

Sounds like Nottingham is the place you need.
