Ok fine, maybe I was wrong but at least I can admit that.  To be honest, ban me, I don't care, I've wasted too much time talking to you guys who seriously have no clue about science or the world etc. I was just giving you guys some of your own medicine so to speak.

Maybe you should just go. You don't need a ban to stop wasting anymore time here.

Indeed, proving the Earth is round to clueless individuals such as W is quite entertaining. It's as if a specific part of their brains are missing which makes it impossible to believe the Earth is round. It's probably a very rare condition, but it explains how there are only about 20 people in the world who are FEers.

i dont understand why you guys are telling nicky that she is trying to convince people, all she was doing was posting her views on here, and it says on the site that you are welcome to sceptics. so if your not prepared to listen to other views then why are you on here?

We are welcome to sceptics. We are not welcome to people so arrogant that they think everybody on this website is interested in convincing them that the Earth is flat.

Who's trying to convince you of anything?

I see the whole point of this site is not to try and convince people that the earth is flat.

It has achieved it's objective.

Nicky's point with anyone who has the money can go into space was pretty good, I thought.  You say you're not obligated to answer what she says, but this is a debate forum, isn't it?  Shouldn't a flat earther here explain to her how and why her point is flawed, instead of saying "We're not obligated to answer your questions."  I thought you guys wanted more people to see the truth?  Well, you're not doing a very good job at that.

Hi guys,

This conversation seems to have devolved from some politely made points in to what seems the script for a precusor to a bar fight (that would cool BTW)

Maybe we should look at Nicky's questions.. (my summaries BTW)

1)Just because it looks flat at close range does'nt mean it is is flat (more a statement than a question).
A good point but needs to be related to something.

2)FE ers seem close minded and dogmatic (also a statement).
True, but that does not make them wrong.

3) Rowbothams Experiment was probably wrong (also a statement)
I would add further to that. When three poles where put in the Bedford canal and measured with a thedolite, the experiment  showed the water surface was curved, as would be expected in RE theory.
Rowbotham's Bedford Level experiment was executed inaccurately, and has been decisively proved wrong.

4) The conspiracy theory is stupid (also a statement)
I consider the conspircy theory utterly implausible.

5) Dark Matter would interfere with the "gravity replacement" theory in FE.
Interesting. I don't agree with it. And there are many much more simple points that can blow holes through FE theory, than relying on Dark Matter (which is still relatively not well understood).

Nicky; what you should learn from this is you need to pose intelligent and pertinent questions, otherwise these guys will drive the whole conversation off the road.

I am learning this too. I am still waiting for one of them to take me on intellectually and honestly, as given half a chance, they won't.
As this thread demonstrates.

Cheers

I have some thoughts I'd like to share.

2)FE ers seem close minded and dogmatic (also a statement).
True, but that does not make them wrong.

Actually, it is our open mindedness that allows us to be flat earthers. We were all at one time indoctrinated to believe the earth was a sphere; it took a great amount of open mindedness to observe new ideas and realize that our previously held beliefs were incorrect.

Not so. Flat earthers are intelligent people who love a good, high quality discussion. You have a lot of ideas to share, perhaps it would be best to divide them up into smaller, "bite-size" threads to generate more responses.

I completely agree with you here.
I am open to any observations, but ultimately we have to rely on evidence.
In particular I am looking for reproduceable experiments.
The idea that people are performing intelligent inquiry into subjects I had written off as solved, makes me feel good (because what if I'm wrong)

2) There is no motive

5) Machine guns don't work at -20 Centigrade (joke BTW)

I have raised several key points in other threads that I feel are central to this subject.
Not one point has been seriously contested.
I have had the spelling questioned,
I have had the canned "It would be the same under FE theory" answer - it wouldnt BTW, or I wouldnt have raised it.
My last one got moved to "Angry Rants" - there was nothing angry about it.

I appreciate your point about making "bite size" points. I may do just that - thanks.

I look forward to having a discussion about this in a disciplined scientific way, hopefully I can clear any preconceived ideas I have, and just look at the facts.

Thanks W

1) The cost

It costs much less to fake a space program than to actually have one.

Quote
2) There is no motive

Money can be a surprisingly good motivator.

Quote
3) There is no evidence

There is actually quite a bit of evidence.

Quote
4) It is such a big undertaking, it could not be kept secret

Only a few people have to know about it. The rest of the NASA employees only know what they see on a TV screen.

Quote
5) Machine guns don't work at -20 Centigrade (joke BTW)

I don't see how this is relevant.

In all fairness, I believe that was markjo who questioned your spelling and he is actually a round earther (I think).

1) The cost

It costs much less to fake a space program than to actually have one.

Cost of McMurdo Base per year $197M (1997 price)
Estimate 72 similar bases (500 kms apart for 36,600 kms - estimate of perimeter)
Annual cost (72 x 197) = circa $14 Billion per year.

Total cost of the space shuttle program ->  $145 billion over 23 years
Annual cost $6 Billion per year

Quote
2) There is no motive

Money can be a surprisingly good motivator.
This is true, but what possible money could be made by pretending the earth is round when it is flat?

Quote
3) There is no evidence

There is actually quite a bit of evidence.
Please present one example, preferably independantly confirmable.

Quote
4) It is such a big undertaking, it could not be kept secret

Only a few people have to know about it. The rest of the NASA employees only know what they see on a TV screen.
Sorry to be crass, but President Clinton could'nt keep 1 BJ secret, and only 2 people knew about that.

The onsite staff at the bases would be at least 1000.

Life "In the Freezer" over winter causes many psychological problems, you get  an extreme version of cabin fever (apparently everyone gets it sooner or later) because of this, there is a very high turnover of staff.

Every country in the world with a space program (there are at least 30) would have to be complicite with the conspiracy
This includes Russia and the USA during the cold war. The is entirely unlikely.

Quote
5) Machine guns don't work at -20 Centigrade (joke BTW)

I don't see how this is relevant.
It was a joke :) - it was in part a parody of the flippant nature with which (what I have read about) this conspiracy seems flung together.

I think it's more space travel is impossible in the FET so NASA doesn't know the earth is flat.

I suggest you read the FAQ, as it is exasperating when people bring up things that have been one of the few well explained things in the FAQ.

This is true, but what possible money could be made by pretending the earth is round when it is flat?

They don't get money from pretending the earth is round, but from faking a space program. They get the funding, use some of it to fake the program, and pocket the rest. Everyone thought the earth was round so it just made sense to fake it that way.

Quote
Please present one example, preferably independantly confirmable.

Well, for one, 5 of the 6 astro-nots who supposedly went to the moon refused to swear on the bible that it was so. Also, it's been proven on this board in many different ways that the earth is flat; following that, the program must be fake because it shows the earth as being round.

Quote

There have been more than 6 astronauts who have gone to the moon. It is quite possible that the 5 (unnamed) astronauts were atheists who would consider it hypocritical to swear on the bible. I have refused to swear on the bible a number of times for the same reason. It doesn't mean I was going to lie.

Personally, if I really had been to the moon and someone came up to me with that, I would have shrugged unemotionally and said, "Alright," then proceeded to swear on the bible that I really had been to the moon. I then would have thanked him for his interest, waved to the camera, and been on my way. What would I care?

Prove me wrong.

This is what round earthers often do. They demand proof of claims then try to find one reason why one small part of that proof could be invalid.

How about this: What proof is there that we actually DID go to the moon?
