theres an FAQ?
Read the FAQUse the search function.Lurk moar.To answer your question, there are two theories behind this. The first is that air is slightly opaque. The second is due to "Electromagnetic Accelration", or "bendy light".

The first is that air is slightly opaque. The second is due to "Electromagnetic Accelration", or "bendy light".Both of which are quickly falsified by FEers themselves. That ship's masts appear first as the come into port from sea is admitted by even Rowbotham, himself. Clearly opaqueness would affect both the mast and the hull in the same way. That "bendy light" is still a ridiculous concept is admitted by even the FAQ themselves.
if I went to the edge of an ocean and pointed a high powered telescope directly foward, why wouldn't I be able to see people on the next continent? if the earth is flat, I should be able to see them
omg, bendy light is the best you can come up with? ok, so how about this, why are there stars on the horzon when there should be objects blocking the stars of view? unless the stars light some how get all bendy on us and jump infront of the objects
some spiral theory that grogberries is working on.
...Ship masts are explainable through perspective effects, bendy light, or some spiral theory that grogberries is working on....

Do pay attention.

As far as I see, they actually work together rather well.
I try to avoid reading what others write.I have not done extensive research on the topic, but isn't opaqueness a key part of the perspective effect?
