If the earth was flat and coming up to an object, the object  would instantly start at maximum velocity 9.8 meters per second . Since the earth if round we fall to it so it takes about 2000 feet for an object  to reach 9.8
meters per second

Even without air friction, you don't instantly jump to 9.8 m/ss. It would take one second.

Air Friction.

But you say that the earth is comming to us so your saying the earth is suffering from air friction?

You're assuming the earth is moving through the air and the air is not part of the earths mass, therefore both the earth and the air move at the same speed.

how would gliding be possible if the earth is moving up towards us?

Once again, the mass of the air is also moving relatively to the mass of the earth. This makes it so you can still use the lift of the air to maintain altitude. For example: You're on a train, you're going fast. You jump. Do you fly backwards? The answer is no, because your speed is relative to the trains. Same thing applies here.

No no no, It's the same thing!

The object would NOT instantly be at 9.8m/s.  It would take one second in a vacuum.

The Earth is not moving through the air, air is being pushed by the Earth.

I'm sorry.  I'm just so sorry for you.  Use the search button.

The mass of the air is NOT moving relative to the Earth, unless you're talking about wind.  But I think you're just confused with terminology.

Just out of curiosity, how did you arrive at 2000ft to reach a velocity of 9.8m/s?

How dare you try and pin that abomination of physics on the Mythbusters.

Did you actually do any math to determine this, or did you just guess?

no, (9.8m/s)/s is the rate of acceleration. 9.8m/s is by no means a max speed. Or we wouldn't get cool pyrotechnics with every Shuttle re-entry.

Apparently it's too much for you.  How do you figure that the maximum velocity attainable is 9.8m/s?  Do you really think that skydivers only fall at 22 mph, and that it takes them 2000ft to achieve that velocity?  Falling off a building wouldn't really hurt too much, as long as you only fell from a few hundred feet, huh?

Sorry Icewall gaurd but your wrong on this one...we continue toaccelerate at 9.8m/s/s until we reach a velocity that is equal to the air resistance we experience when we fall and then remain at that velocity which i believe is around 200km/h, known as terminal velocity.
