Great book, read it when I was a kid. About re-tuning your perceptions, which themselves are creating your reality, such that you then leave this reality. Like, I'm not seeing this keyboard because it's there, it's there because I'm seeing it. My brain decides it's there, so directs all my senses to sense it accordingly. I can feel the chair I'm sitting on because the nerves in my arse are being told by my brain to do so.
So everything I see and feel is determined by my brain, and everyone in my immediate universe is tuned to the same wavelength. Alter that wavelength slightly and I go into a completely different world.
Anyway, the book was about a government in a futuristic Earth releasing mind-altering drugs to relieve overpopulation. The drugs created a new perception in the minds of the junkies, to the extent that they moved to that new perception, i.e. physically left this world, hence gradually relieving the overpopulation problem. Far-fetched, but gets you thinking.

The vortex theories of David Ash make reference to a similar thing, but that's now probably destroyed my street cred.

Anyway, back to my quest to find these drugs......

Interesting.  Would the created realities of two people be allowed to interact in any way?  Or would they be completely independent of one another?  For instance, if Bob's brain accepted that he lived in a world with Bill.. but Bill's brain perceived a world without Bob, would Bob be "deleted" somehow?

Very simple answer: no.
When Hiroshima was bombed, I am pretty damned sure that there were some people that were sleeping, or not watching to the sky. Thus, as they could not foresee it, and none of them imagined it, it couldn't have happened? LOL if that theory is right, then you could not be surprised either, you would always get what you expected. Also, you would always get what you expected for christmas.

That was an easy one to counter.

Pretend there are only 2 people on the planet.  One of them was born with a condition where the chemistry of their brain is like being on LSD all the time.  One of them was born normal, as we define it.  They both obviously perceive the world in very different ways, and without the "masses" to "agree" on reality, how can it be determined who is seeing the TRUE version of reality?  Or, maybe neither of them are.
Look at when you dream.  You have probably had some bizarre dreams before, when you have a giant banana for a sister or something, and you readily accept it as reality at the time.  Your whole life you might be an only child, living in a world where bananas are not siblings.  Yet your eyes close and you quickly accept this giant banana for a sister as if she's been there all your life, and think nothing strange about it.
I don't buy this theory personally but there is definitely something to be said for perception defining reality.

Or alcohol. When we're drunk, (or drugged) are our senses just pickled, or heightened to the extent that we can perceive far more than when we're sober? Is all the interference of other stimuli and preoccupations of the brain suppressed such that we are then able to see far more of our reality? Is drunkeness the real true reality?

Rich, you're almost right. Our minds do not make THE reality, because there's no such thing as a single reality, but rather direct us to the reality we select each instant, thus allowing free will. It goes like that :

- In the beginning, there was a single incertainity quantum. Reality just could'nt decide left or right, so choose BOTH, thus creating two reality lines. Each reality line forked, and forked, and forked...

- We get infinite reality lines, existing out of what we call time, that is only our flawed perception of the entropy flux; imagine an spagetti dish gone crazy. Each entropy flow quantum, infinite reality lines are created, by the forking of the already created ones.

- Our free will creates our reality by selecting the forkings we'll follow. But mind, truly we choose both sides of the uncertainity quantum solution,
so there's an infitivy of each one of us; only we aren't aware of all the others, following different reality lines.

Personally i think the earth is round.
Its good to respect other peoples opinions but unless you argue and defend your beliefs, they will stagnate and become meaningless. Still all this ranting is hardly nessesary is it :?:

Anyway back to the subject in hand. I think that since reality and concoiusness are inextricably linked, it is pretty easy to say reality is consensual. I think that Jungs collective conciousness theory comes into this somewhat; whatever people think will happen does, but only within the restraints of other peoples perceptions. If that makes any sense?
How did this come about? Personally i belive that since all matter was contained together before the Big bang there is a kind of quantum entanglement going on, with all our conciousnesses being interlinked having come from a unification in originality. Does this make sense to anybody? To me it explains the concept of god, which would be the unified conciousness we are all part of, the concept of the soul, our own quantum conciousness, and the concept of telepathy since we are entangled mentally, messages and concepts can pass between two minds over any distance.
