Reason is as follows:
Whenever the virus mutates, if it mutates to get worse, it will spread less - because more severe symptoms means it is harder to pass the virus to the next person. Thus, nearly every new virus tends to get less severe the more it spreads, because the less severe versions usually have a higher R value, thus spread faster and thus defeat the more dangerous virus versions!
