Flat Earth - Too Many Contradictions
« on: July 10, 2016, 06:08:34 PM »
There are too many contradictions to this 'Flat Earth Theory' to name. I am going to discuss a few. Also don't know how much it matters but I am an academic and my field in mathematics.

1. Flat Earth cannot explain how some areas of the world are dark and some are light. If the world was really flat then no matter how close or far the sun was, every single country would be able to see the sun with their own eyes or telescope.

2. I have seen the explanation why it is apparently possible to go around the world on flat earth, however why hasn't someone actually used the map to go towards the edge?

3. There are many proven theories in my field and especially the sciences such as physics where we our work is based on knowing and working with the earth being a globe. If the Earth wasn't a globe many of these proven theories of fundamental science would break down. The word here is proven meaning we have verified this through experimentation and it cannot be denied. These are things like gravity, magnetic forces, constants such as pi, phi, e etc.

I think we all know this flat earth thing is just a bit of nonsense, it doesn't work, there is no mathematical proof and whats really funny is flat earth people seem to contradict themselves on many occasions.

IMHO these websites may just be just two more spoof websites.
A lot of us come to this website because is does get really funny at times and it is a cheap form of entertainment.
It might not have been so in 1850, but this IS 2016.
Stick close , very close , to your P.C.and never go to sea
And you all may be Rulers of The Flat Earth Society

Look out your window , see what you shall see
And you all may be Rulers of The Flat Earth Society

Chorus:
Yes ! Never, never, never,  ever go to sea !

Ask them how you can flight from New Zealand to Chile in 11hours... They will either ignore you or ask a mod to delete your message.

You've entered a religious community here. They all know it is not flat, but Jesus or Allah tells them to say it is. So they do so.

You can even find some people claiming Nuclear Power or Nuclear weapons do not exist, Fukushima / Techernobyl is a hoax, etc. etc.

Welcome!

Yes, I see so many everyday things that do not in themselves prove that the earth is a globe, but they make me 100% convinced that it is.

These things range from simple observations anyone can make:
  • Sun and moon rising and setting,
  • The sun and moon staying essentially the same sizes from rising to setting,
  • The sharp horizon at sea.
Then there are the observations that fit perfectly with the Globe, but are never adequately explained by a flat earth:
  • The phases of the moon,
  • Lunar and solar eclipses, and
  • The accuracy of the prediction of sun and moon rising and setting times, as well as position in the sky.
Other observations are more technical, yet fit the Globe and not the flat earth. Some of these are:
  • The required spacing of microwave repeater towers,
  • The alignment of satellite TV and internet dishes.
And then there are the things that crop up in general reading, such as astronomical observations that would be meaningless if the earth were flat. For example, the earth to moon distance has been estimated since Aristarchus of Samos,
  • with the earliest reasonable estimates by Ptolemy of 64 1/6 times the radius of the earth at the moon's farthest farthest point (or about 410,000 km - using the current radius of earth).
  • The French astronomer, A.C.D Crommelin, in from 1905 through 1910 used meridian crossing to determine the distance to within ±30 km of the current value.
  • Astronomers O'Keefe and Anderson calculated the lunar distance by observing 4 occultations from 9 locations in 1952 at a mean distance of 384,407.6±4.7 km
  • Then radar measurements reduced the error margin giving a mean distance of 384,402±1.2 km
  • And finally laser measurements place the uncertainty in the mm range.
These "estimates" are reasonably consistent even from the earliest and they all show a "distant moon".

Yet all the Flat Earthers can tell us that
Quote from: the Wiki
The Moon
The moon is a sphere. It has a diameter of 32 miles and is located approximately 3000 miles above the surface of the earth.
With no justification as to how it was measured, estimated or guessed.

Is it any wonder we claim the Flat Earth Hypothesis is full of inconsistencies?

I think most of this site is trolls trolling other trolls that they don't know are trolls. One troll posts a flat earth post, other trolls think it's a genuine post and post trolly replies, and the original troll thinks they're genuine replies and enjoys having successfully trolled some FE believers. Overall, I think there are about 3 genuine believers on this site.

That made me sad seeing this, then literally not a single person replying :( .... I will talk to you, though I have not been convinced to the flat side, I can still talk about :)

in all fairness that's 3 too many, the flat earth theory has been categorically disproven with testable evidence.. I'm not sure why anyone still believes after seeing the evidence

in addition, almost every single 'proof' that FE's use have been disproven upon testing too

so there's absolutely no reason left for anyone to be fooled by the FE's anymore

Sure there is.

Basically the same reason YEC's exist.  They have some sort of need for it to be true.

almost every single 'proof'

1. Flat Earth cannot explain how some areas of the world are dark and some are light. If the world was really flat then no matter how close or far the sun was, every single country would be able to see the sun with their own eyes or telescope.
False.  The sun's light can not travel forever.
1 cloud can completely obscure the sun.  You know that.
There are more than 1 cloud in the sky.  Do the math.

2. I have seen the explanation why it is apparently possible to go around the world on flat earth, however why hasn't someone actually used the map to go towards the edge?
Too difficult.  Superman has not been born yet.

You are lying.
None of those things have been proven.  They are all science fiction.

Does it threaten you?

They have. Also, are you saying pi and phi are science fiction?

How does your "The sun's light can not travel forever" explanation explain
  • the sun rising at exactly the predicted time (withing a couple of minutes anyway) every day, even when the clarity of the atmosphere varies drastically.
  • the sun's disc disappearing behind the horizon in about 2 minutes. How can "light can not travel forever" explain that!
Sometimes I find it hard to believe that any Flat Earther has ever really seen a sunrise or sunset.
    Wider Spacing
Are you really going to claim that the sun in these photos is simply being hidden by the "dirty atmosphere"!

Numerous people have travelled across Antarctica and I don't think any were Supermen!

Great argument!
If if denies your pet flat earth idea it's a lie!

There are numerous things that are in the everyday life of many people (maybe not you or me).
A couple are the marine Gyro-compass and the Gyro-theodolite. These devices are used by navigators and underground surveyors and rely for their operation on the rotating earth.

Then there is something as simple a the sundial. To operate accurately the gnomon must be parallel with the south-north axis of the earth. The flat earth (of any breed) does not have a north-south axis! Have a peek at:
