Flights to the Antarctic science stations are uncommon and usually specially chartered, meaning their schedules are not publicized well in advance, nor do they follow consistent routes. Because the Antarctic environment is so difficult, and alternative or emergency landing sites so unavailable, the plane routes are seldom the most direct and shortest.
However, as I have pointed out, plane and boat trips AROUND Antarctica are not quite so uncommon. A boat trip usually takes about a week, and the measurements - time, mileage, fuel consumption - all demonstrate that Antarctica is a small continent, much smaller than Australia, and not nearly as enormous as the distortion at the edge of a variety of map projections might suggest.
