Papa, has it ever occurred to you that the Space Shuttle was never designed to be a hypersonic aircraft!

During the ascent phase it is out of the densest atmosphere before reaching these speeds. You might note that it ascended inverted and obviously the trim is adjusted for zero lift. The shuttle is at the Max-Q point about a minute after launch and at about 10 miles up and, guess what, they do have many people on staff who know a lot more than you (yes, everyone from the janitor up). So, on the way up, no great problem, all planned out, designed and simulated.
You can look it up! Nice bit of bedtime reading.

On descent during the re-entry phase the wing has an angle of attack of around 40°, yes very highly stalled! After all they wanted drag!

Sure at supersonic speeds that airfoil will have a very high drag, but other design aspects (wing plan, etc) are fine. Finally when slowed to subsonic speed, the airfoil does the job it was designed for - provides lift. Mind you the overall lift/drag ratio (about 1) is probably closer to a brick than glider, but it does the job.
