Greek Conspiricy
« on: January 08, 2016, 12:38:47 PM »
The idea of the round earth is a conspiracy.  There is no doubt about it.  It has been a conspiracy since the Greeks first "Proved" that the earth is round.  The astronomer Garminarcus of Samos realized that the best way to gain power and fame in his mapping endeavors was to make sure that people rely on only his maps to be able to navigate.  He then started spreading his hateful gospel among the people.  Although it took a long time to take hold, and many people who believed his theories were prosecuted by those who knew the truth of Garminarcus' sins, the seeds of deceit had been sown.  Garminarcus passed the secret to his mapping down to his son, and his grandson after that, and it still remains in the hands of his descendants.  Even the governments have either been maliciously convinced, or otherwise payed off to make sure that the truth never gets out.  That is why to this day, the majority of people believe the earth is round.  Around the early 1900s, the mapping company Garmin was formed by Garminarcus' descendants as a nod to his original ploy, but, fearing the people would discover the truth, the Garminarcus descendants created numerous other companies of the same purpose under different names to put the people off the scent.  We need to stop being taken advantage of by our governments, and the corporations that run them.  Fight back against Garminarcus and his descendants!

What complete and utter garbage! I've been trying to find a word for people like you, nearest is in German:Verschwörungsliebhaber.

You should realise that maps work best when they are based on the actual shape of the object mapped.  I seem to have noticed that in 150 years or so the flat earth movement hasn't yet come up with a workable map!

The obvious reason is that the shape of the earth simply will not fit on a flat surface. All the flat maps of the earth are projections of a globe with known and accepted distortions.  For example an Azimuthal Equidistant Projection is very useful in orienting a radio antenna and giving the distance to any location.

If the earth were really flat no projection would be needed, just a reduced scale version of the flat earth! The shapes of all the land masses and distances between them are well enough known, so why no accurate flat earth map?

So, if you want acceptance get cracking and get a workable map.

Did they work better than other maps? If not, why would people use them? If so, why? Maybe they were better?

I think your satire detector just failed. I thought it was pretty funny...

Garmin is named from its founders first names:  Gary Burrell and Min H. Kao, and it's not even a mapping company.

Yes, and no one knows how a spherical map could work, but it does, it's just one of those thinks you can never answer, like why the SCP exists.

I said nothing like that, more like "If you can't map the real earth accurately onto a flat map, the earth cannot be flat". That is my challenge.  Come up with an accurate flat map of the earth or accept that it is not flat!
By accurate I meant at least having the same "shape" as the real earth.
There are a number of gross measurements that are quite different on a disk and on a sphere.

Hmm..  sense of humor seems to have an intermittent fault...     my advice is make the jokes a bit more obvious.

And yes,  by all means use the globe map to map the flat earth,  after all that's what all the flat earthers do.. :)

Maps are just beyond human understanding.
