if the earth travels around the sun in an elliptical orbit, some times we are closer to the sun than at other times when we are farther away and we drag the moon with us around the sun on our elliptical orbit which takes us closer to and farther away from the sun, considering that a total solar eclipse only happens because the moon is exactly 400 times smaller than the sun which is exactly 400 times farther away, assuming the moon can not shrink and grow to compensate for its various distances from the sun just to accommodate a total eclipse. how in an elliptical orbit can the sun always, always be 400 times farther away? or to put it more simply how does an object that moves closer to and farther away from another object always manage to to maintain a fixed distance from that object that never changes?

The Moon isn't exactly 400 times smaller than the Sun. That's close, but not exact. On the other hand, the ratio of the distance from the Earth to the Sun and the Earth to the Moon varies from about 362 to about 418 because the Earth is in an elliptical orbit around the Sun and the Moon is in an elliptical orbit around the Earth. When the ratio of distances is less than about 400, the Moon appears slightly larger than the Sun; when the ratio of distances is greater than about 400, the Moon appears slightly smaller than the Sun.

That's simple. It's not.

When the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun and is far enough away to appear smaller than the Sun, you get an annular eclipse. Haven't you heard of those?

Simple. It doesn't.

You already asked that question and I lready answered. You could have find this answer by yourself, or you could have sincerelly asked, but no, you clearly thought you are way clever than the thousands of astronomists and astrophysicists in the world, who can be beaten by JUST ONE QUESTION !!. Seriously, if you tone down, humble yourself a bit, and stop acting proud of being ignorant, we may be able to answer some of your questions. Im not kidding, we are all here to learn, and there's nothing wrong with not knowing something if you ask sincerelly.

I'd quit reading that inane thread by the time he asked there, so didn't see your earlier answer.

I guess it wasn't the one he wanted to hear. I presume it's still not. Tough. ::)

Do you really want to learn something or are you just acting the troll ?

On the other thread I answered your question. I gave you some suggestions as to where to go to get answers to your question about eclipses. Or you could just look it up for yourself.

If you want to get answers you go to an expert in that field.
Ever hear of someone who had a disease and was referred to a doctor who was a specialist or expert at treating that disease ?

There is something called the learning process. You have to ask questions.

There is an old saying: "The only dumb question is the one you don't ask."

Well, in english, the word mobile can mean many things too, such as this.

or also a phone.  So, you were not mistaken, but the person that misinterpreted what you meant was either mistaken, or more likely, being obtuse.

I remember seeing those "mobiles" which are also called "model of the solar system" or  "Orrery" even in classrooms in elementary school. Some of them were elaborate and geared to illustrate  the rotation of all the planets and their moons around in their orbits around the sun.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orrery

If the earth was a flat disc there would have been some of these models showing the sun orbiting over the earth. But there have been none. This is just one more evidence of the solar system and lack of any evidence for belief in a flat earth. Along with a flat earth map of the earth a flat earth model should be a prime project for The Flat Earth Society.

Well, you got your answer,   now here's a question for you smart arse, how do lunar eclipses work on a flat earth?
Since the sun is on the other side of the earth,  that means lunar eclipses are impossible on a flat earth  aren't they?

The common flat earth explanation is it isn't the earth that comes between the sun and the moon that causes a lunar eclipse. It is because some kind of a "dark object" comes between the sun and the moon to cause a lunar eclipse. This "dark object" is invisible except during a lunar eclipse. It appears this "dark object" is some kind of a gigantic ping-pong paddle. Is this right or wrong, flat earthers ?

One of the problems I have is that it amazes me how any one with even an elementary school education could even think, much less believe, that the earth is even any shape other than the globe that it is.I have been on this website a little over two years and have not seen anything , or not much of anything, that make any sense from the flat earthers when compared with the reality of things.

Yes,  that's the Rowbotham theory,   a magical "dark object"  pops up when required, and then vanishes.    I was hoping brutal_delux would answer,   thinking maybe the "dome people"  might have a hologram moon version.

Of course you have, why would anyone doubt the word of someone who has tested and seen everything Earth and space has to offer.

An annular eclipse was viable in Utah at May 20, 2012.  Look it up if you don't believe me.

The last thing sceptimatic cares about is whether or not you really saw an annular eclipse or not. He enjoys taking random potshots at anyone that he wants to, and isn't interested in whether whatever he says is true or not.

[aside]I wonder if the webmaster at Sky&Telescope is wondering about all the hits this popular picture is getting from theflatearthsociety.org.[/aside]

It might be worth it if, quoting the posts that embed this image, it might be worthwhile to change the image tags to url tags (or just remove the tags altogether). We've seen this image plenty of times now.

In your reply, look for:
Code: [Select]
[img width=600]http://www.skyandtelescope.com/wp-content/uploads/ASky-0483.jpg[/img]

And replace it with:
Code: [Select]
[url]http://www.skyandtelescope.com/wp-content/uploads/ASky-0483.jpg[/url]

If you do that, it will show up as a link to the image rather than an embedded image. Also note the width=600 modifier in the opening tag. When you're embedding a large image in your post, this is how to make a it fit in a reasonably-sized browser window so no scrolling in necessary. The '600' in the sample refers to 600 pixels width - set as appropriate for your image. Thanks!

When I was in the Navy, I was pretty far down on the totem pole-a mere Petty Officer. So you don't have to take my word for knowing that the earth is a globe .But as far the earth being round , would you doubt the word of an Admiral or a Captain who has been on an around the world cruise ?....Maybe more than one time  ?
Ask them whether they steered around the world and kept turning on a circular curve or if  they kept a straight course across the oceans ? Ask them how they determined the distance to the horizon ? Ask them if the horizon was a distinct line where the earth and sky met (or sea and sky met )  or if it was just a blur in the distance ?
