why does it make it pathetic? i certainly choose to believe what i want to and i definitely think for myself. i chose to believe the Bible. it influences my thinking by showing me what i must do to live a honest and righteous life, but i still have free will and i still think for myself. surely you dont think the Bible poses guidelines for the entirety of life? we still hafta think for ourselves for politics and education and school, etc, etc. The Bible doesnt tell me who to vote for, and politics is a huge part of my life. same with education and jobs.

i think that you are the pathetic one, and deep down your insecurities are searching for someone or something else to pin down.

Actually, the office of Papacy has been around since either 50AD, if you count ST. Peter in rome as the start of the Papacy. Or 440 AD, when Leo the great gave the Popes "the full range of apostolic powers that Jesus had first bestowed on the apostle Peter"
Alterations to the bible have happened since both dates, things have been added and taken away from the bible,

the bible was put together in between 50 AD and 150 AD, "st." paul (as the catholics refered to him. technically, i would be a "st.". christians are all saints, in the true interpretation of the word) WAS NOT A POPE. there was no "pope". Paul was the leader of the early church. the pope is not the leader of the church. he is just some fat old guy that sits on a throne and gets praise all day

The Pope is still technically leader of teh Catholic faith. just because he doesnt not fulfill that role well doesnt mean that it isnt his role.
And since Catholicism and Orthodox Christianity were the only two (main) sections of christianity until the reformation, the popes would have drawn up the bible. And yes, i agree that the bible was put together between 5o and 150 AD, but there have been editions since then, for example during the reformation, many books considered canon went out of favour

the pope is the leader of the CATHOLIC faith. catholicism and protestantism are VASTLY different.

i dont think the pope had an actually say in the forming of the Bible. the pope ran the show (the show visible to the outside world) it was the real church authorities who canonized the books of the Bible

I would have to agree with the skeptical scientist on that point Sara, I hope you take heed.

As to the integrity of the bible, it has as much integrity as the billions who have twisted its meanings for their purposes over all the centuries of its existence - that is it has none.  Disregard it, hard as that may be after a christian upbringing.  You dont have to disregard spirituality or God for the sake of honesty.

And get over the Catholic/Protestant thing for crying out loud - realise the other denominational extremists are the ones most like you, just brought up in the opposite denomination!

I think the earth could be flat, but there is little point in pondering such an actuality since that would open up endless possible flaws in the scientific lense we look through in our day to day life.  I guess i'll have to have faith in the globe until I can verify it as best as possible for myself, which I do intend to do - and maybe i'll even let you know what I find out.

Some cool thoughts in this Forum.

I didn't say all Mormons are bad, but in my experience, most of them certainly are.  A few months ago, one told me how before he was a Moron, he used to go out drinking, and while drunk, had several women.

He was a Londoner, but you'll hear most of them promosting their religion with "porky pies."

They're supposed to have given that up in the century before last.  Nowadays, Moronism is an entirely image based religion, desperately trying to shake off its dodgy past, and remain true to it at the same time.

Hence, we use the term polygamy to mean polygyny.  Mormonism will not refer to polygyny because its leaders started on polyandry, so the less clear term - polygamy - is used.

that's right, but neither did catholicism. the church "evolved", if you will, into catholicism and protestantism was formed during the protestant reformation, led by Martin Luther and others

Erm... What's the issue? This guy is my new hero! He's just out there, doing what he wants to do. You think People without religion behave better than this? You're kidding yourself. The downside to the whole story was that he abandoned his life choices to become a mormon :(

We were doing pretty good for a while there, but now a buncha fundamentalist nuts are trying to throw us back into the 1800s.  And it doesn't take fanatics to buy into the bull.  The atheist core only helps to make matters worse by repeatedly jumping on any display of religion.  It sickens me that stores get picketed by atheists who feel offended by the store celebrating Christmas.  You start seeing atheist parents so afraid of their children being exposed to religion that a Christmas play in school becomes a monster to them.  This just feeds the paranoia of the religious right and encourages them to be more vocal.  It's a vicious cycle.

But then we've got the ludicrous ones.  People who are so insecure in their own marriages and faith that they think a couple of gays getting married will somehow diminish their marriage.  Just because YOU think something's wrong doesn't mean you have the right to persecute others.
