« on: March 17, 2015, 03:09:52 PM »
Hello Jerry here I joined the forum last week if you have nt met me yet.  ;D :) :)
Anyway I am a flat eartherer and a dedicated christian and i believe everything the bible says is true because it is like no evolution etc. I beleve in the flat earth because it makes sense in many ways but also because the bible says so (I THOUGHT!!!) however I tried to bring the bible proof of the flat earth to a christian forum to convince them here: http://www.christianforums.com/t7870498/#post67172388
(I said I was not convinced about the flat earth because i wanted to ease them into it my friend who is a preist he is Burl he has posted on this forum a few times he is a preist (not actually but he lieks to call himself that) and so he knows about these things and so he told me to do this).
The responses surprised me these people now a lot about the Bible!!!! they refuted all my quotes and I dont know are they write or our they not?  ??? ??? ??? :'(
If you know any good christians here or atheist fans of the bible please help me.

Thanks and GOD BLESS YOU AL

Jerry  :)

The bible says nothing of a flat earth and there was no word for sphere. Also the Bible has a lot of metaphors and is sometimes hard to understand. God bless you and I hope you understand the Earth is not flat

I can tell you're having fun trying to make flat earth "believers" and Christians look stupid. I'm neither, but, please, just stop. It's tiresome.

I believe he already said he has Asperger's, so that makes sense. My nephew has many of the characteristics and is completely unable to determine when anyone was kidding; he is quite smart but you have to be exceedingly literal and precise when you want him to understand something. Mike - if I'm confusing you with someone else, I apologize.

[Edit to add] Yeah... here it is: http://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forum/index.php?topic=62406.msg1644399#msg1644399

That said, I do believe FlatEarthMaverick is just pretending with the obvious "over the top" Christian rantings and wacky (even for flat-earthers) flat earth "notions"; it's tiresome and unnecessary. The "multiple posters on one username" shtick is tedious, too.

Nope, you are not confusing me with someone else.  I am not completely unable to identify sarcasm, but I am still quite bad at it.  Especially when I am communicating via text.

Anyway I am a flat earther and a dedicated christian and I believe everything the bible says is true because it is like no evolution etc. I believe in the flat earth because it makes sense in many ways but also because the bible says so.....

Q1:  Considering that the bible was not compiled by men of science, why do you still believe that it's "true" in a scientifically enlightened 21st century?

Q2:  Do you accept any current science as absolutely correct, some of it, or none of it?

Q3:  Do you accept any of these quotes as correct?

   •   Trees were created before man.    (Genesis 1:11-12, 26-27)
   •   Birds were created before man.    (Genesis 1:20-21, 26-27)
   •   Animals were created before man.    (Genesis 1:24-27)
   •   Man and woman were created together.    (Genesis 1:26-27)

Since you worship science as a god.
Could you please enlighten us lower form non scientist, peasant types, why we should do as science says and ingest for our health an unsaturated, oxidising, genetically modified round up ready canola oil?
Why are we told to eat this? Is it poison?
Are you blindly following your science god?

Please Geoff set us straight.

A1:  Science is not a "god".  Gods are imaginary and don't exist in the real world.

A2:  Genetically modified canola oil produce two enzymes, one of which protects it from the glyphosate and the other which degrades the glyphosate in Roundup.  And canola oil is simply rapeseed with the (harmful to humans) chemicals glucosinolate and erucic acid removed by selective cross-breeding—no evil zombie-robot-lab-rat science involved at all. Tomatoes, zucchinis, potatoes, soybean, corn, and apples are typical of other GM foods.

A3:  Unlike most flat earthers, I don't "blindly follow" anybody or anything.  Flat earthers blindly follow Samuel Rowbotham's 150-year-old pseudoscience, whilst after due diligence, round earthers follow 21st-century scientific texts written by qualified academics expert in their respective fields.

—I also think you're judging yourself extremely harshly by calling yourself a "peasant type" tappet.  All the same, I trust that I've enlightened you?

Selective cross breeding. Gotta love that one.
You left one part out. Tell me why I should consume an unsaturated oil. That is missing hydrogen atoms thus leaving it open to lipid peroxidation. Does your science not say that when this is taken to the atomic level free radicles are created. Then in scientific circles they say free radicles are the primary cause of cancer.
Gee, now that sounds tasty .
So keep going Geoff tell me why I should do as science says and eat it. Yet the science says I should not eat it.

My people used to believe, the first birds, animals and humans grew on a big tree. The whole story actually reads like an early attempt of a purely naturalistic explanation for the origin of things. Then the Church came and told us the Truth...

Can you give an example where "science" tells you to eat this stuff? If anyone does, it's usually someone's marketing department. In this case, it seems like "science" is telling you that it's not a great idea.

In science there can be different, but still reasonable, interpretations of the same data; this is especially true in biology, which is exceedingly complicated and far from perfectly understood. Can you give an example where "science" says they're always right? If someone tells you that, it's a clue he's probably a charlatan.

Then don't if that makes you happy.

You want an example of science telling you to eat this stuff, where the hell do you live?. Start with the fraud Ancel Keys then educate yourself from there.
Your science says that every saturated fat man has ever eaten since being on this earth is bad for his health and will kill him.
So science created an unsaturated, oxidising, toxic seed oil to save his life.
Gee thanks science.
So even with your evolution it just don't work. Really, 4.5 million years eating meat and saturated fat got you here.
Then 30 years ago science says that was all bad for our health, you need the good heart oil. Now your even going against your evolution. How could you evolve to thrive on unsaturated oil in such a short time?
Its all bullshit.
This is why I would not believe an ounce of shit any of you roundies say on here.
Your own chemistry proves unsaturated fats are toxic but you cannot grasp it.
That's right, not my chemistry, your chemistry!

I am really disappointed in you all. This poor fellow asked a legitimate question and all he received in response was inane dribble about food. I just joined the forum to answer this question about the bible and a flat earth.

So to begin with lets start by a basic issue, people often read the bible then try and interpret it to say whatever it is they already believe. One needs to read the text according to what the authors believed, not what we might believe.

So lets read the bible together, and see what it actually says. Not what we want it to say. The bible is the true word of God, to be taken literally. Anything outside of a literal reading is wrong, and undermines Christianity.

Daniel 4:10-11. In Daniel, the king “saw a tree of great height at the centre of the earth...reaching with its top to the sky and visible to the earth's farthest bounds.”

If the earth was a sphere could we see a tree from anywhere on it? No of course not. In order for this verse to be true the earth must be flat. Some Christians will say that when the bible uses the term 'earth' in this verse it refers to the local region, not the entire earth. Well this still will not satisfy the problem.

According to a “round” earth viewpoint the curvature of the earth should prevent you from seeing objects at distance if they are not high enough. This (http://www.davidsenesac.com/Information/line_of_sight.html) article details how far away to can see objects because of the supposed curvature of the earth. This (http://skipr.net/wp/notebook/2011/08/mobile-internet-its-just-radio/) gives the general formula for line of sight.

So according to these formulas you can calculate how far away one should be able to see Mount Sinai from a instance. You should only be able to see Mount Sinai from 170 km or 105 miles away. Isreal is approximately 500km across. Source (http://www.travelmania.co.il/distance_table.asp)

So clearly even if they were referring to a local region the earth still cannot be round! You cannot even see a mountain from that distance away!

Now obviously you will never have a day with no clouds to obstruct your view, this is why we cannot actually see distant mountains. But daily weather conditions do not matter, God could simply make the day clear enough when needed for that verse to be true.

Some more versus along the same lines.

Matthew 4:8 says, “Once again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world [cosmos] in their glory.”
Clearly in order to see all the kingdoms of the world the earth must be flat.

Revelation 1:7: “Behold, he is coming with the clouds! Every eye shall see him...”

Again, a single spot in the sky visible by all people requires a flat earth.

I need to go right now, but I can return to most more examples later. There are literally hundreds of versus in the bible that require the earth to be flat.

Daniel 4:10-11. In Daniel, the king “saw a tree of great height at the center of the earth...reaching with its top to the sky and visible to the earth's farthest bounds.”

Urrm, why have you cut the start of that quote off?  The full quote is:

"The visions of my head as I lay in bed were these: I saw, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great. 11 The tree grew and became strong, and its top reached to heaven, and it was visible to the end of the whole earth."

Daniel was having a dream at the time, a symbolic one at that.  Which makes the rest of your post pretty pointless.

Firstly: It clearly depicts that the earth is flat, even in a dream. It reveals the worldview of the writers. As I said before we need to read what the authors believed, not what we believe.

Secondly: The next two versus say the same thing. Yes the verse from revelation is also a dream, but it is a prediction of something that will literally happen.

The Devil taking Jesus to the mountaintop was not a dream. The bible describes that as a literal event.

If we are to take the bible as true history, we cannot pick and choose what we are going to read literally. It is all literal.

Great, please explain these verses so I can understand the bible is a literal book to be taken 100% literally.

MAT 1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

LUK 3:23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli.

Was Jacob literally Joseph's dad? Or was Heli literally Josephs dad?

JOH 10:30 I and my Father are one.

JOH 14:28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

Is Jesus literally one with God or is God literally greater than Jesus?

GEN 1:25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
GEN 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

GEN 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
GEN 2:19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

Did God literally create every beast that walks the land before Adam? Or did God literally create Adam first and then all the beasts of the land to be named by him?

1KI 4:26 And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen.

2CH 9:25 And Solomon had four thousand stalls for horses and chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen; whom he bestowed in the chariot cities, and with the king at Jerusalem.

Did Solomon literally have 40,000 stalls and horses or did Solomon literally have 4,000 stalls and horsemen?
I have 13 [academic qualifications] actually. I'll leave it up to you to guess which, or simply call me a  liar. Either is fine.

Your own chemistry proves unsaturated fats are toxic but you cannot grasp it.
That's right, not my chemistry, your chemistry!

Whose chemistry is it that's telling you that unsaturated fats are bad? At any rate, as I said, don't eat things if you think they're bad for you. Easy-peasy.

Since you mention Dr. Keys, do note that he lived to 100 years old; that's much longer than average, especially for men. If he took his own dietary advice, it must not have been that bad. But anyway - you need to realize that no matter what you do and don't eat, you're still going to die of something. I've already outlived Steve Jobs, of the rigorous Organic-Vegan-Fruitarian-No-processed-food-ever lifestyle, by several years[nb]Maybe not ingesting drugs like Jobs did has something to do with it... dunno.[/nb]. I'm not dead yet and you'd probably be appalled at my diet[nb]It includes *gasp* Not-Organically-Raised-And-Hormone-Free Red Meat and some processed food![/nb]. I don't smoke[nb]I'm not that stupid.[/nb][nb]Or play Russian Roulette.[/nb], always wear a seat belt when traveling in a car, and do get a reasonable amount of exercise; all these are known to help live a longer life.

But brandnewb does have a point. This has gotten off track. Back to the bickering about Bible verses.

So lets read the bible together, and see what it actually says. Not what we want it to say. The bible is the true word of God, to be taken literally...

Nope.  The bible is not the true word of any imaginary god.  Gods don't exist except in some people's fanciful imaginations.  Gods are regarded as supernatural entities by the science world.  Along with goblins, ghosts and ghoulies.

And if we took the bible literally, then we'd be murdering homosexuals everywhere every day...

Leviticus—  20:13  "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them".

The Abrahamic bible has to be one of the most offensive, morally corrupt, degraded pieces of literature ever written.

I have 13 [academic qualifications] actually. I'll leave it up to you to guess which, or simply call me a  liar. Either is fine.
