Nothing Going on Here

I first came across flat Earth belief on other parts of the internet, in particular youtube. I started posting objections to the arguments being made in a respectful manner, to be honest I initially thought it was a joke. The responses I got were childish and often abusive, I have been called brainwashed, mad and a shill; I have been accused of being in the pay of both NASA and the US government. Over time my respect for these people dropped to subterranean levels and I become increasingly sarcastic in my dealings with them.

The argument I presented here against a flat Earth has been posted on the videos of every flat Earth proponent I could find, it has not been answered. So, I came here, the online Mecca for flat Earth belief. My arguments have been met with deafening silence. All I have found on this forum are a bunch of people pulling flat Earth theory to bits, if you can dignify it with the word theory, without a significant response or at least any response worth mentioning.

I don’t know what this phenomenon is all about it, what’s behind it or even if it is genuine. There isn’t one shred of credible evidence to back up a belief in a flat Earth and not a single person I have come across who can effectively argue its case. I suspect there are 4 basic types of people using this forum. True believers, those playing devils advocate for sake of debating, trolls and those, like myself, who are arguing that the Earth is round. Actually, there is also a small amount of people at least pretending to argue the Earth is concave, although I would class those as trolls; surely nobody genuinely believes that. What proportion of people are in each camp it is impossible to say.

Is there some purpose to what is going on here other than people having a bit of fun? I can’t see any.

Exactly the same thing's happened to me.  You get used to it after a while.  Ad hominem attacks are the flat earthers' main powder for their guns.

If they relied on addressing genuine questions or statements of scientific fact in an educated and—dare I say—a mature way, then they might gain some credence for their somewhat bizarre theories.  If you want juvenile insults, name calling, and crude derogatory putdowns, then you've come to the right forum LOL.

As far as I can ascertain, I'm thinking that many of the "self-styled" flat earthers are playing devil's advocate most of the time.

No, it is because he received it for his work on proving the quantum nature of light.  It is possible that at the time of his award, that there was not nearly as much experimental data on relativity as there was on the photoelectric effect.  Or perhaps they were subtly acknowledging that although Einstein was the first to present the complete framework of GR, there were a few others that provided mathematical tools that aided him, and even another mathematician who very nearly solved GR before Einstein.

Regardless, I think you will find that the last reason that Einstein received a nobel prize for something other than relativity, is that he was a fraud.

Einsteinian relativity is just another in a long line of proofs that common sense is almost always not applicable to a study of the natural world.

It can predict theoretically the experimentally measured magnetic moment of the electron to 11 decimal places. QED is a relativistic theory, it is premised on special relativity being correct. Physicists didn’t abandon their common sense perceptions easily, they were forced to by what nature was revealing to them through experiments. It was a painful process. Arguments against special relativity are basically of the form, “I am not capable of understanding it therefore it must be wrong”.
