Cazazza Dan presents Night Music
« on: May 08, 2013, 10:08:23 AM »
Night Music is a limited materials composition for piano (with the sustain pedal on at all times), flute, piccolo and glockenspiel. The version in this release was essentially complete in 2010 (a few notes were altered when I updated the instrument patches) but remained unreleased due to my initial plan to had three other parts. I completed the second and laid down the piano for the third, but gradually began to lose interest. I messed around with it a bunch of times between then and now, but it wasn't until February that I was able to hear the "completeness" of the original first part, which needed no supporting sections and very little adding or taking away. Limited materials means that there are strict limitations of certain parameters in the composition, in this piece the major rule is quite simply that certain notes cannot be used, resulting in a nonatonic (nine note) scale. I hope you enjoy it - yes, even you, Nomad.

On the download front I am slowly phasing out my usual host MediaFire (because it is shit) and migrating my back catalogue over to the Internet Archive, as such I recommend you stream, download and read liner notes on this page. Alternatively you can stream here and download here.

P.S.: This time Saddam will definitely not be confused! Or else!

I just finished listening. I liked this a lot! It felt a lot shorter than it was, and honestly sounded like something I could hear playing in some sort of TV show to me. I was sitting there trying to figure out what it would be playing on, however, and was at a loss. :[ Anyway, seriously, I loved it. I love the piano in particular. :]

If David Lynch ever makes another TV show I want it to be played on that. And thank you for actually feedbacking and not posting pictures of highland cows!

Wow, I enjoyed this very much. I too particularly enjoyed the piano and the sustain. It also crept along in a way I found not only very relaxing, but let my imagination run wild the way I like. I will definitely be listening to Night Music again.

That thought makes me hard.

That's highland cattle to you.

But I did like this.  I preferred it to your other work, actually.  It's hard to describe, but it felt a bit more complete, more fully realized than the other stuff you've shown us.

Thank you very much! I'm especially glad that you appreciate the pacing, and of course that you think it deserves repeat listens.

Oh, me too, me too. Sometimes I wish Mulholland Dr. had been picked up for TV. Still, between Twin Peaks and Hotel Room I guess I'm okay (On the Air had lots of potential but was not very good for some reason).

Thanks! I suspect it seems more complete because of the highly controlled structure; normally I write freely, but this one is quite strict in terms of what can and can't happen.

(excellent picture, btw, may have to change my soundcloud avatar)

I wish that as well (I haven't seen On the Air). I often think about what Mulholland Dr. could have been like if it were picked up. I'm still glad to have the film though, it's one of my favorites of all time.
