Steve Irwin, better known as the Crocodile Hunter, was killed a little while ago in what police are calling a "freak accident."

Poor guy.  You kinda think that he's invincible when you see him wrestle crocodiles and stuff.  Like he knows what he's doing and these animals will never bring him down.  It's sad that this happened.

Oh, man - poor Steve. Although he embarrased us by being the absolute Australian stereotype, we will miss him. He has done amazing things for animal conservation.

RIP Steve Irwin.

At least this is what killed him and not some automobile accident or anything.  He would have preferred it this way I think.  Too bad it just wasn't in another thirty years or so.

Everybody says how they're glad he died doing something he enjoyed, but I just have to wonder if his last thoughts actually went something along the lines of "gee, I wish I were dying with my wife and kids instead of with this pesky stingray."

They reckon there's a chance he died instantly - on account of the barb puncturing his chest and putting a hole in his heart :(

I think it's a bit more then the fact that he did so much for animal conservation that makes us sad he's gone. Here is a guy that loved life, his family, friends, and his job. We all saw him on TV and thought, "wow, this guy really likes animals." He was the sort of person that many of us wish we could be, someone geniunely loved his life. If I felt the same way about my own life I could only be so lucky, and I think many other people feel the same way. He wasn't fake like many celebrities and "eco-warriors" are. Most of his money and time went to his passion for animals and even to helping the austrialian aborigines. It felt like I got hit in the gut when I found out he died and it remained like that for a day or so. It's just a shame people like this die so young. But at the same time, seeing an 80 year old guy trying to wrestle a croc would be pretty pathetic, maybe it's actually better this way. Anyhow, RIP Steve, we had a lot of fun watching you and you'll be missed.

it's pretty sad that people are so interested in seeing a tape of steve irwin get piecered through the heart by a stingray and dying. We know how he died, infact I could probably imagine the whole thing in my head from all of the details given. There is no value whatsoever to releasing that tape other then to satisfy the morbidity of some pretty twisted people. If stingray deaths were more common or if Irwin had done something to annoy the ray in someway then maybe there would be value in releasing it. But ray deaths are extreamly rare(hell i've swam with them in the carribbean) and police, the cameraman, and those that have seen the tape say that it was unprovoked and just a freak occurence. So to the people that say things like "we all knew it would happen eventually, the way he gets way too close to dangerous animals," you have been debunked. When Steve delt with things like snakes and crocs and other such animals, he was on his guard, knew the risks, and took precautions. There is no real reason to be on your guard from a stingray. You can go out on trips and feed them and pet them, I've done it. They have been my favorite animal since I was a kid (for some reason i'm not sure). So in the end it was a freak accident from a nomally docsile and friendly animal that killed him, not a wildly dangerous one. A shame, but for someone with so much heart, it's fitting that he died from a wound in it.

Well, the only people that had the tape were people that want it destroyed, and they gave it to the police, who aren't going to copy it, and then it's going back to the people who want to destroy it. So it's probably getting destroyed, in addition to the reason(s) I gave above. JFK's autopsy photos were kept on record, this tape will not be.

He didn't die instantly, he pulled out the barb first - which is probably what actually killed him since sting ray barbs have over 200 barbs pointing in the opposite direction.  The advice in any first aid course with dealing with people who have been impaled with something is not to pull it out and this is especially true with sting rays - there can be no doubt that pulling it out would have done significantly more damage than when it went in and there is a good chance it was pulling out the barb that killed him (the reports of what happened support this).

I also don't really think he had a very positive influence on the environment at all.  While there is no doubting that he was an entertaining person, and it's sad that he's dead, he was a strong supporter of the Liberal party - which is the more conservative party in Australia (like an "environmentalist" also being a republicn) and it's very hard to understand how somebody apparantly so passionate about the environment could support the political party that is the most destructive of the environment out of all the major parties in Australia.  He famously suggested that somebody should punch Bob Brown in the head for interrupting George Bush when he was speaking to Australian parliament.  Bob Brown is the leader of the Australian Greens party and has been fighting to protect Australia's environment for more than 30 years.

I think he should have hit Bob Brown. Steve Irwin was, in my opinion, a fool, but a pleasant fool, and one who earned the money he got. I don't begrudge him that at all.
As for the conservation, well, I can't think that the Beatty Government in Queensland (Labor), can say much because of what they did in SE Queensland.
As for Tasmania, you have to consider more than just ideals. The eminent Senator suggests closing down all renewable logging in Tasmania (not protected forests, which are not logged). But does he consider the results? The hundreds of people out of work, the driving out of manufacturing, the importing of other places' timber where logging is NOT regulated?

It's great to have an idea, but you need a solution. Greens groups are never short on ideas on what should be done, but no practical thoughts about how to fix it.
It's lovely to say, for instance, that nuclear power is evil and should not be used. But...what do you suggest to replace it?

Sorry, I hijacked the thread somewhat, but Germaine Greer, feminist man-hater, said a similar thing about Steve Irwin. Sure, he made money on imprisoned animals, but get with the picture, he's given more money to charity and done more for the environment than any of these greens party activists.

/rant over. :D

I don't think Steve supported the Liberal Party - where di you hear that? I find it hard to believe he wasn't a Greens supporter.

Germaine Greer is a stupid fat bitch that should go crawl into a hole and die somewhere. She lost her relevance a LONG time ago.

In...1970 as I recall....

I don't know his affiliations, but I know he was friends with John Howard, and had gone to the lodge at least three times. Does that prove it? Probably not.
