IN PROGRESS: Avatar sizes.
« on: August 21, 2010, 01:47:22 PM »
I believe we need some avatar size limitation.
Some of the members (example - click!) use huge, animated avatars, which take approximately A WHOLE LOT OF TIME to load. While using a proper browser and simply blocking the picture is a half-solution, a much simpler one would be not to let people use 1033x1033 100-frame animated GIFs that may happen to be ~26.5MiB of uselessness.

Also, Dann.

Unfortunately, as far as I am aware SMF has no solution to this other than to prohibit external avatars altogether.

If it cannot be sorted out automatically, I would suggest doing it manually.
I understand that the moderators/administrators might have better things to do than check each and every account's avatar, but they could at least issue warnings for it if they stumbled upon a person with such an avatar.

Added a max avatar size for external avatars 125 x 125, all larger will be refused.

Now it looks like some of the avatars aren't scaling properly.

Its because your avatar is too big. Its 216 x 293 pixels. You wouldn't be able to upload it now.

Below is a resized version if you want

Or maybe its just time you got a new avatar.

Its because your avatar is above the max size.  I assume if it has already been set, it allows you to use it still.  I'll fix this now.

Thanks for pointing this out!

Can't you delete all the uploaded avatars, and make everyone reupload... or something?

Turn off externally stored avatars, then back on. Maybe that would force everyone with a giant avatar to be refused.

I could be wrong, but I don't think it would work like that; I think turning it off would only disable anyone new from using external avatars, not force existing users' external avatars to disappear.  Buuut, I don't know how SMF handles that so i can't be sure.

It would disable all external avatars on phpbbs, so I assume it would do the same here.

This is what it says in the phpbb control panel:

Allow general usage of avatars;
If you disable avatars in general or avatars of a certain mode, the disabled avatars will no longer be shown on the board, but users will still be able to download their own avatars in the User Control Panel.

I can clear everyones avatar easily, that seems like a pain for everyone though.  It won't recheck, afaik, if I disable reenable.  It probably won't even clear out external avatars, but I can check.  I'm open to ideas though.

I'm reading the smf forum, if I come across something I think will help I'll post it.

The only solution I've found at SMF is to let Javascript or HTML resize the avatars, with Javascript being preferred. The thread is a couple years old, though.

Well, this might be better, although it will delete all the external avatars. At least it won't delete every avatar.

http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=424208.0

UPDATE smf_members SET avatar = '' WHERE avatar LIKE 'http:%' OR avatar LIKE 'https:%'

Do you have the box ticked that says "Check the avatar size every time it is displayed"? It will slow the forum down, but you could use that until everyone resizes their avatars, then you could uncheck it.

You're being very optimistic in thinking that people will voluntarily resize their avatars.
I don't know what you're implying, but you're probably wrong.

Yeah, I could write up a query or use that one, but it doesn't really solve the issue.

The option you asked about doesn't exist.

I think I have a solution, it will do the job.  I'll see if I have time to implement it.

That is weird.

The mods should make an avatar size rule, give everyone enough time to comply, then get out the BAMHAMMER. People who've been gone a long time won't matter, their posts are usually buried, and the odd one can just have their individual avatar deleted by an admin, without being warned, since they aren't around any more.

I have several solutions that will work for this.  I have to decide which one is most appropriate for our server resources and go from there.  I'll keep you up to date next time I work on this.
