I just looked outside...
« on: August 16, 2006, 09:37:51 PM »
...and the ground was flat. This finnally convinsed me that the world must be a flat place after all. I don't care about the evidence proving this is wrong, there are already many theories which would avoid those. I can see with my own eyes that the the earth is flat.
I also picked up a rock from the ground and looked at it very carefully. Try as I might, I could not see any tiny particles with other tiny particles orbiting them that made up the rock. I guess that means that atoms as we know them don't actually excist. The electron micrscopes that show these atoms must just be part of a goverment conspiracy and the images you see must just be pictures. Nuclear reactions must be part of this conspiracy as well, perhaps they secrectly destroy the enviroment in a very suble way and the goverment does no want us to know this. I'm so glad I had my eyes opened by coming to this site.

Okay, I just wanted to make sure. And I'm not clogging up the forum, this is actually a thought out arguement against FE theory that I just gave in a sarcastic way.

Electron microscopes can't show atoms.

You need particle accelerators to find evidence of atoms and sub-atomic particles... I think.

No, there are photos of atoms:

The image looks a little fake because it's false-color, but it's real. IBM scientists made this image atom-by-atom with a scanning tunneling electron microscope.

I'm surprised that you can shoot electrons at an atom and have them bounce off so you can take a photo like that without moving the atoms.  That must be some heavy ass fucking nucleus.

From Wikipedia: "A Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) can be considered a type of electron microscope, but it is really a type of scanning probe microscope and is non-optical. The STM employs principles of quantum mechanics to determine the height of a surface. An atomically sharp probe (the tip) is moved over the surface of the material under study, and a voltage is applied between probe and the surface. Depending on the voltage electrons will tunnel or jump from the tip to the surface (or vice-versa depending on the polarity), resulting in a weak electric current. The size of this current is exponentially dependent on the distance between probe and the surface."

So, technically, you aren't bouncing electrons off. You are tunneling them to and from the surface. Which means the nucleus doesn't have to be heavy.

But still, the nucleus IS heavy.

They didn't split it under a microscope.  They bombarded uranium with neutrons and studied what was left afterwards.
The splitting of one atom of uranium produces about 2.89*10^-10 J of energy. That is equal to 6.90726577*10^-11 calories or 2.73919148*10^-13 BTUs, which no one would notice.

No, you definately can NOT see atoms under a microscope. The best resolution you can get with today's technology is x-ray crystallography, but even then you can't see any details of the atom, just a blob where that atom is.

It's not an optical image (in the same way that an infrared photo isn't an optical image), but it's a real image just the same. Scanning tunneling electron microscopes can "see" individual atoms. Nothing smaller than that though.

You can not see "tiny particles with other tiny particles orbiting them...", the only thing you can see is a 'blob' where the atom is. You can not make out the structure of an atom like the original poster seemed to be suggesting.

The reason you can't see the "tiny particles orbiting" is because the tiny particles that make up an atom are very much tinier than the atom itself. Most of an atom is empty space; the only reason the STEM can see them at all is because the electrons orbit so fast (very near lightspeed) they appear to form a spherical shell (much as a rotating fan blade appears to form a complete circle).

It's true, we're all mostly empty space. If an atom were the size of a football field, the nucleus (which contains nearly all the atom's mass) would be the size of a dime.

next he'll be trying to tell us all the EARTH itself is made up of "tiny spaces" as he calls.  And how do you fit your "round" planet in all these tiny spaces exactly?

Many FEers say the world is flt because they can see its flat with their own eyes. But with that logic atoms don't excist because you can't see an atom with you own eyes.

As long as we can all come to consensus that atoms do exist, we can move on to what this forum's really about.

How did it go from "oh, I looked outside and saw flatness" to "atoms don't exist" anyway? -.-
