2 Moons visible on 27 August '06. Chance of a LIFETIME

Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August 2006.

It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.

This will cultimate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65 M miles of Earth.

Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am (IST).
It will look like the Earth has 2 Moons.
Don't Miss it.....
The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

This was in  The Age, so these times are based for people living on the East Coast of Australia, uit will obviously differ for those of you in the northern hemisphere.

But no, no need for telescope. Will be as big as the moon to the naked eye.

I get this spam every year.  Maybe you could explain how

Quote from: "quixotic"
It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.

is even remotely plausible.

apparently it's a scam...unless they are in on a massive conspiracy to prevent people from seeing the moon

And why, if it is plausible, no one noticed this when it was even closer in 2003.

Here's an interesting response on that link:

I saw the same email today and it half sucked me in.
However you have set the record straight.
can anyone shed any light so to speak on Alcyone the central star our solar system is suposedly tracking on a spiral up and down cycle that lasts 24,000 years.
There is a growing school of thought on the www that by 2012 we will be fully immersed in it,s photon band for a period of 2000 years

Has anyone heard of this before?
Should I start a new thread about this?

EDIT: I'll start a new thread, because I really want to hear if this is a well known theory, or if it's just this guy.

Fuck Erasmus.....must you shit on my parade??

Of course I knew this was bullshit, it got sent to my work emial address which i inturn sent to a friend who is an astronomer..

I was only posting to see peoples htoughts... not everything has to be refuted.

Heres what he had to say...

Quote
No, it's not true.

It's a mixture of half truths, loosely based on the mars opposition (read close approach of mars) 2 years ago.

When it's close and bright, Mars is still only the 3rd brightest planet, behind Venus (the Morning Star) and and usually Jupiter, so it's nowhere near as bright as the moon, something like 100 times less bright.

But having said that, the statement is not totally false, because you can 'usually' see mars anyway

I was about to say the same thing.  Glad you did it first and took the wrath of Quix instead of me.
