I never said I hated it. Sure it sucks, but nothing's wrong with collecting something and even possibly making some moderate use out of it. But I'll be picking up a MacBook Pro long before I make a pass at the iPad. The only potential an iPad could possibly offer is either through the same jailbreak process as the iPhone (which I currently cherish), or for it to run an OS that is at least as open and accessible as Mac OS X itself. Why it's not running that is beyond me. It's not like it would be hard for Apple to provide such a crucial bit of functionality as well as provide an elegant and friendly GUI like iPhone OS has (afterall, iPhone OS is just super stripped down version of Mac OS X itself).

tl;dr Apple fell very short of epic win here, but the novelty/collection is what I am interested in.

Side note: I am also looking to pick up some older Apple devices such as a Newton or a few older PowerBooks. I have two G3 iMacs in my garage, and a G5 PowerMac as well.

I do not like the idea of the iPad, however I will reserve true judgements of it once I have tried it. I had never really fancied the iPhone before I tried one. Then I used one for 2 days to see what it was like to live with(before I got my Droid). I hated it, so I can now officially say that I hate the iPhone, with my own reasons and under this logic.

As before, you could probably make some reasonable judgements about the iPad from what we have seen. However an operating system is much more personal and should definitely be tried before you can judge it legitimately. I also feel you base your judgements too much on a hatred of Microsoft, rather than what the OS is actually like to use.

I refuse to use an operating system which is primarily based on proprietary software. When viable alternatives are available, I will even abandon Ubuntu for something which is completely free.

Uhhhhh that's pretty understandable actually. I wouldn't want a noisy and fragile hard drive in this thing. Expandable Secure Digital memory is what is needed.

You do realize how crappy a hard drive would be on a device that constantly loads aps. Also, it made iPods incredibly susceptible to magnets (from personal experience)

No, a computer has a ram large enough to hold multiple aps at once. An ipod with its limited memory forces you to have only one ap open at a time.

I open applications when I start my computer and keep them running until I am done with it.

If you run linux you could use the swap space on the hard drive.
