why is the horizon curved?

according to RET, it would be easy to argue that the earth is a sphere, so how does one account for the fact that the ocean appears to curve at the horizon (most easily viewed at sunrise and sunset) and why do the clouds appear to curve at the horizon from a plane, as can be seen in the picture below

if it were barrel distortion, wouldnt the horizon appear to bend downward as one focused on a point below the horizon?

The Sun is a spotlight. We are seeing the edge of the spotlight. Note that the curve of the horizon is always that of an ellipse-- as would be expected on a flat plane-- and not an arc-- as would be expected on a sphere.

I've never seen it as a part of an ellipse.

Truthfully, an arc of an ellipse could be the same as an arc of a circle, so in the third dimension, same thing would apply.

go to the ocean beach.
the ships get smaller as they go away; so there is an effect on the eyes.
there is humidity in the air; droplets of water...so there is an effect on the eyes.
put the strongest telescope on the ocean beach...it will let you see much further than your eyes can because the lens is curved and counter views the over-all effect of humidity [dropets x billions = a curvature] --- plus our eyes are round, giving the ears {brain} a rounder appearance than the actual
NOW IF ANY ROUND EARTHER IS GOING TO COME IN HERE AND COUNTER WHAT I JUST SAID, THEN.....
curvature and size were made so that man can get down to what he is supposed to do, rather than look at creation all day, for the sun was created to show what is in darkness.

It can be concave if the earth occupies the lower half of the photo. See that pdf Tom linked to.

It doesn't matter if the earth would be a sphere or a plane, you would see the horizon curved in either case, as long as your eyes are above the ground (which they are, of course). Imagine an extreme case - the earth is a tad smaller, like a basketball (RET) or pancake (FET) and you stand on the "earth", looking at your feet. The "horizon" would curve, right?

The only way we wouldn't see a curved horizon would be if the earth was infinitely large, or it had straight edges, like a square.

There are several 'clues'... to tell u that the earth IS ROUND!!!
The curvature of the horizon.
The shadow of  the earth casts on the moon during an eclipse.
how can a flat surface have a gravitational pull to keep the moon in orbit, or how can we obit around the sun....  or are you guys going to come up with anther stupid group " the sum obits the earth society'?  ;D

all right, but what I meant was that no matter if the "ground" on the earth is flat (pancake or a ball cut in half), the horizon would still bend. thus the original statement is false, useless.

it's visual.
a ship gets smaller as it goes out further from you on the shore. UP TO 20 MILES.
train tracks come closer together, the further away from you they are. UP TO 2 MILES.
tom bishop calls it 'barrel distortion', i call it brain distortion.
man can only do so much; that's why his vision was limited - but not his inner vison, or intelligence in this case.
come on guys SMARTEN UP and accept it in your vocabulary!
God gave you what you have now. You know there is more, but you don't want to ask for more, you expect it on a platter..

there is an infinite sign in mathematics.
why , in the first place do you round earthers ask flat earthers for answers.
go to your round earth experts. they will give you satisfying answers.
i haven't seen one round earther happy with an answer from a flat earther.
that makes sense.
your experts told you a system in the first place, so go back to them for an explanation if you didn't understand them.
choose one or the other for a life style. we are hilarious enemies.
if you are stuck in the middle , then go to those who are incomplete or unsure. you know that i am certain.
in other words, when mommy told you something and you didn't understand, then you should have asked her what she meant, not daddy.
this is the flat earth forum, have respect.
and unless you are a flat earther , don't ask me to explain what i just wrote , unless you are a flat earther and understand what i just wrote.
if you are a round earther and wish to spy into the conversation over here, then find some form of self-initiation, or pray before clicking onto your mouse
it would be nice if only flat earthers could write on this forum for a couple of months, then mankind would know how to approach the subject
if any of this doesn't happen, or i get exiled into the land, then i will open "a round earth society' based on the round exterior shape of the flat surface of the earth
still expecting a horizontal avalanche

Just ignore Levee and Raa, they're both kinda doing their own thing.

@Raa barrel distortion is an effect caused by the curvature of the camera lens. Nothing to do with what we see in real life.

Unless you have the altitude a picture was taken at, you can't measure the curvature from it.
