Did i just lose 20 IQ points...?
« on: August 08, 2009, 01:06:50 PM »
I just checked out this forum and I personally cannot believe what I am reading, I am completely shocked that anyone could be this serious about this topic. It saddens me to think that there are people out there who truly believe in such outrageous claims.

Honestly I can't decide what's worst, The Flat Earthers or the Young-Earth creationists. If it was true that the earth was flat, everything that we have done and achieved in the world of science is complete bullshit. The laws of physics, thousands of years of study and research gone to waste, the time and effort of all the scientists and mathematicians in vain, everything we knew would be wrong! -if the earth was flat. I'll never understand people like you. And I don't know how on earth someone can be as ignorant as this society of people.

So I have some questions to ask you, but I?m quite sure even if I pose questions against the flat earth theory, you will all manage to give a completely irrational and illogical answer. Either that or completely disregard it and attack the round earth theory. I think I already know the answers but let?s see what you guys come up with.

*****

If the earth was flat, why haven't our oceans drained away to nothing?

Why is the earth flat and not the sun? Or the Moon? Or anything else in the universe? Oh wait, am I wrong? Is everything in the universe flat?

Are any of the flat earthers here a Young Earth creationist? Or a believer of the earth centered universe theory?

I am dead certain that there are hundreds of pilots that have flown around the planet earth, showing that it is round. This obviously contradicts the flat earth theory. How do you explain this? (Or is it because the government is paying the pilots to shut up about the flat earth, and make detours here and there?)

How can you believe that the earth is round? How can anyone? How can anyone fake a round earth? The Greeks first discovered that the earth was round. How in god?s name can the government fake a round earth for 4000 freaking years?!??! Or was the Greeks paid in cash to shut up about it as well?

Do you believe in the theory of gravity? Of course you don?t need to?

Why would anyone fake a round earth? What purpose does it have?

I?ve heard that the people here claim that we never went to the moon as well. WTF?

If the earth was flat, why don?t we have any photo or video graphic evidence to support it? (Why do I even bother asking?? Obviously the evidence was faked!)

If the earth was flat, how do you explain earthquakes? Tsunamis? Volcanoes?

The flat earth theory requires a whole new set of laws of physics. I don?t see any. Because the round earth set of laws cannot apply to a flat earth.

What will make you believe that the earth was round? Does NASA have to strap you to the back of a rocket and shoot you into space? Having you orbit the planet?

*****

Good luck answering these questions? Hell, I don?t think I wanna even hear the answers! I?ve lost 20 IQ points already!

I have read some of the answers that the flat earthers have given to other "Non-believers" and i'm quite appalled by the... How should i put this nicely... the incrediable amount of ignorance in the posts!

There is a vast ice wall that keeps the water where it is. The ice wall is roughly 150ft high. This also explains why you can find a vast plane of ice when you travel south. Antarctica as a continent does not exist.
Why is the earth flat and not the sun? Or the Moon? Or anything else in the universe? Oh wait, am I wrong? Is everything in the universe flat?
This argument is a non-sequitur. You might as well ask, "How is it that snakes do not have legs, but dogs and cats do?" Snakes are not dogs or cats. The Earth is not a star or the moon. It doesn't follow that each must have exactly the properties of the others, and no more.
Are any of the flat earthers here a Young Earth creationist? Or a believer of the earth centered universe theory?
No, most FE'ers are atheist.

Circumnavigation is still possible on a flat earth.
How can you believe that the earth is round? How can anyone? How can anyone fake a round earth? The Greeks first discovered that the earth was round. How in god?s name can the government fake a round earth for 4000 freaking years?!??! Or was the Greeks paid in cash to shut up about it as well?
Lurk moar, it's been shown that faking a round earth would not be nearly as difficult as it sounds.
Do you believe in the theory of gravity? Of course you don?t need to?
Gravity - No          Gravitation - Debated
Why would anyone fake a round earth? What purpose does it have?
Space agencies have huge budgets. They spend a fraction to fake a round earth, and pocket the rest.
I?ve heard that the people here claim that we never went to the moon as well. WTF?
Yes, we've never been to the moon.
If the earth was flat, why don?t we have any photo or video graphic evidence to support it? (Why do I even bother asking?? Obviously the evidence was faked!)
You want to see a flat earth? Look out your window.
If the earth was flat, how do you explain earthquakes? Tsunamis? Volcanoes?
Same as a round earth.
The flat earth theory requires a whole new set of laws of physics. I don?t see any. Because the round earth set of laws cannot apply to a flat earth.
False. The same laws of physics apply the vast majority of the time.
What will make you believe that the earth was round? Does NASA have to strap you to the back of a rocket and shoot you into space? Having you orbit the planet?
Nothing would make me believe lies.

Mars is a planet, as well as Earth. What law of physics make the earth different from the rest?

By the way, if you believe in evolution, you would know that snakes used to have legs. They still have the pelvic bones that conect them.

If the earth was flat, we wouldn't have a magnetic feild, or auroras, and volcano eruptions require a flow of magma, and a flat earth cannot generate such a flow.

Wouldn't the ice wall melt away? WHERE DID IT COME FROM! and HOW was it made! We don't have the technology to make a 150 foot wall of ice while millions of tons of water are rushing at the work site!(You are not answering my questions fully!)

Nothing will make you believe? That is not what science is about, there is always the chance that one is right or not. I would believe the earth was flat if viable evidence is shown supporting that fact. The Flat Earth theory doesn't even follow the scientific method.

Why would the ice melt? It would obviously be cold enough in those regions to keep the ice frozen. After all, that's exactly what happens in RET in Antarctica and the Arctic.

Yes I have. However, the extent of the ice wall is unknown. It could take any amount of time for it to 'erode', and global warming or no global warming, ice sheets would still exist. After all, they do in RET, don't they?

Allright, I'll play. So there's an 150 FOOT wall of ice? considering that measurements place about half of the world's oceans at about 3000 feet deep, that's one useless wall. So, ok I'll fix your logic, there's an 3150(generous) foot high wall of ice around the planet. How did it form? Why does the ice not spread? The earth's temperature is rising, soon the ice will melt and the oceans will LOWER not RISE as they ACTUALLY ARE? Also, since the earth is flat the moon orbits in such a way that it's gravity would pull the oceans either out toward the wall of ice at all times, or have zero effect. Zero effect of the moon means no tides, which means no ocean currents and no wind. It must be divine intervention, good god help us all on our terrible flat planet you made when you lost a bet I guess.

This is why science teachers should be allowed to sterilize certain students.

Please read the FAQ. The moment you said

the moon orbits in such a way that it's gravity would pull the oceans either out toward the wall of ice at all times

you proved that you haven't.

Oops, my bad. Well, let me clarify. The day I have a question that you can actually answer, is probably the day after I've had a major car accident and am nearly brain dead playing with legos and drooling. Your theories lack any sort of actual proof, that's why they've been ignored by the scientific community as a whole. Absence of proof is not proof of absence works both ways you know. I don't need to read the FAQ because I already had a better grasp of these scientific principles when I was 10 then most of you will ever even attempt to have. I'm apologize for my brusque tone but frankly this level of ignorance frustrates me greatly.

Cheers.

You just summed up this entire site. Ignorant bliss. Why try and understand the world when you can make crap up without proving it to justify some crazy conspiracy theory that involves every scientist on the planet? By the way, I am actually curious, there is a question you can answer before I end up brain-dead. What happens when the frog whose back we're sitting on has to poo?

The belief that the Earth is on the back of 4 elephants which are themselves on the back of a turtle is one held largely by some Hindus. I don't think anyone here believes that.

This is actually true. People have been making up crap like the sun/moon are both spotlights, there is an ice wall 150ft wide, you have made up a diameter of the flat earth, and you say we are moving upwards and the flat earth is infinite, all because you don't realize that it is impossible to see a curve of the earth, and that is what the horizon is. The earth curving.

I read it, and couldn't stop laughing. It's full of so much speculation and psuedo-science that would have been mocked by phrenologists in the 19th century. If anything, ANYTHING in that faq was remotely true, none of the laws applied to electricity and magnetism would work, which they do, so guess what, you're most likely very, very wrong. I will keep an open mind in the sense of "anything is possible", but in the face of so much empirical evidence to the contrary, it's nigh impossible for any of those so called "hypotheses" to be even remotely true. One can "say" anything is truth, but fact is supposed to be proven with repeatable experimentation, at least that's what the rest of us think.

I hope more and more that this is a gag site, and yet, I must continue to do my mission work in this barren wasteland of the mind.

Cheers.  ;)

There isn't one piece of solid scientific thought in the entire faq. The closest I saw were some basic philosophical concepts that were being touted as actual hard science. There's a reason Philosophy is a humanities/social science degree and not a hard baccalaureate degree like chemistry or physics. It's conceptual, not empirical and to claim it as such is incorrect.

Please, leave your disciplinary bias out of this. Science and Philosophy go hand in hand; neither is 'harder' or firmer than the other.

Please, leave your disciplinary bias out of this. Science and Philosophy go hand in hand; neither is 'harder' or firmer than the other.

Philosophy is an understanding of man and oneself, Chemistry is an understanding of how our world works, physically. They are both valid but have totally different applications. It's like saying that a heart surgeon and a counselor are the same thing. I'm not coming down on Philosophy, truth be told it's one of my favorite subjects, I'm merely stating that it shouldn't be used in place of empirical evidence in a scientific debate.

Philosophy is an understanding of man and oneself

First of all, that is an extremely limited definition of philosophy. Secondly, the problem is that many people have come to regard the words 'science' and 'truth' as interchangeable. They are not, as has been shown many times. The whole point of Zeteticism is that it challenges the underlying philosophy of the scientific method. A methodology is only as strong as the reasoning behind it.

That's a fair statement, but consider that truth is all the FE theory I have heard. I have yet to actually see "fact". Truth is easy, you can state truths all day for yourself. Fact needs to be proven, as close as possible, to certainty and be able to be reproduced by anyone with the correct equipment/training. I fail to see the flaws in a methodology that has led to penicillin, super-computers, and solar energy, just to name a few.

Please, let's not get into that. Not only is success not a measure of validity, but the scientific method has lead to just as many failures as it has successes. I'm not trying to present that as a criticism, because as I say, it wouldn't prove anything. I'm just letting you know what lies at the end of that argument.
