We have already posted pictures like these one:





But according to Samuel Birley Rowbotham (Tom's friend), it is due to perspective. But obviously, Rowbotham doesn't know how perspective works. At least if he was right, he would be able to restore the hull of the ship with a telescope, but I've never seen such an evidence supporting his claim.

Difference is, that this is an observable phenomenon. As in you could observe this happening. You can believe in unicorns and a flat earth if you want - but I find it easier to believe in something when I can actually observe is to be the case.

Hasn't worked so far...

If I drove you to the beach, gave you a nice powerful telescope pointed at a boat traveling at 90? away from the shore and you saw it drop below the horizon, would you believe it?

Sure the light will be bend from entering air of different density, but not in a straight line or an easy curve, it will be all blurry like the air just above a candlelight. besides there really isnt any heat blur over the ocean.
