Thoughts
« on: January 03, 2009, 10:36:06 AM »
There have been many thoughts on suicidal thoughts. I remember one quote saying they were what allowed people to stay sane. Basically knowing you aren't trapped is necessary for people to be ok with their situation.

So basic question, does everyone consider it? I don't mean you were serious, just do you think about it.

Camus deals with the philosophical absurdity of suicide, and I'm reading it now. I figure if you haven't though of it, in some way, you are in a state of serious bad faith.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicidal_ideation

I started getting 'suicidal ideation' when I had problems with anxiety and depression. I didn't get anything planned out but I would start thinking about it because well, I wasn't feeling that great for a long period of time. I kept dangerous things (pointies, poisons, tall places to fall) away from me in case I had an impulsive urge. It was more or less a compulsive train of thought I could not stop thinking about. I don't get into that mode much anymore. I usually do when I start feeling anxious again. Usually a type of existential anxiety.

I remember pulling a 30 odd hours coding run once on a project with a very tight deadline, and the thought crossed my mind that I could just die instead, and my whole body just relaxed so much at the thought it really freaked me out... gave me the impression you can run out of "will" the way you can run out of energy trying to swim to shore, and at some point what keeps you going may just dry up, so it made me want to be sure I never got there.

I've had random impulse thoughts, mostly under stressful situations like long periods of highly focused driving, it crosses my mind I can just turn the wheel and completely, irrevocably and radically change the sequence of events that are about to happen, but I think that is more a macabre fascination with the frailty of human existence and not about a desire to actually die.

When I was younger I had the idea if I ever decided to kill myself, I'd join the military or a group of monks or something - basically if I didn't want this life/body/ego deal I'd at least try to recycle it in some decent manner, so I guess I thought about it a little bit.

But really, it just doesn't come up.  If I was crippled, or partially brain damaged, I may consider it.  I honestly don't know how I'd react to that, but as I am now, I really don't ever think about it.

A friend and I were talking about fearing death the other day. It came about that he was afraid of the unknown, whereas I was purely stuck on the irrational fear of regret. I follow Mark Twain about death, and so I'm not afraid of being dead. All I fear is not dying in a satisfied state, regretting what I haven't done.

Ironically, I find Sartre a lot more depressing than Camus. Everyone is always referring to Camus as a pessimist and he's supposedly one of the most depressing authors in terms of content (suicide, futility etc.) and yet he strikes me as much more positive and idealistic than most existentialists.

Martin Buber is my favorite existentialist! Buber is very kindhearted in his message I think. He basically says that we make sure we are not dead by living in relation to other things. I like to read him outside. Makes me feel all cozy and satisfied. He doesn't trample much on this topic though I don't believe. I've only read one of his books though. Sartre pins me as some sort of a jerk on a personal level. I haven't read Camus much and I don't think I ever will. Just cause.

I think Walt Whitman had a very healthy attitude towards death! He's also a favorite of mine. He could be considered somewhat of an existentialist.

Suicide is a natural idea. Anyone who says they havent thought about it is lying. I usually only think of it when I was about to stay up all night to do some sort of long essay, but thats more of silliness or laziness than actually being suicidal.

ps: if u are ever blue, 9 x out of 10 u just read some Camus

i thought extensively about suiceide through some rough times in my life, but it all seems kinda silly now. What mainly stopped my was knowing how i would devatsate my family and friends. Also, i am way too squeamish and probably lack the stones to off myself. I added a new reason after all that, it is that i REALLY like being alive.

I think it is normal to contemplate death and suicide, interesting to think of the implications and what will follow after.
Death is the most important part of our lives.
