FLat Earth Debate
« on: November 29, 2008, 08:04:15 PM »
I am going to be engaging in a debate (for mere fun mind you) over the shape of the earth and came upon your forum while researching the topic.

I was wondering if I might pick your brains a bit and get your ideas as to what approach you would take from the perspective of someone living in Columbus' day who is challenging the notion that the earth is round rather than flat.

Thank you in advance for your insight.

It looks flat. Or just quote Rowbotham.
Like the sun, the stars are also expanding and contracting their diameter as they spin around the hub every six months.

Definitely inform yourself on bendy light, as the boat over the horizon thing is a common RE proof.

The columbus myth is something perpetuated by school teachers. The greeks started the idea of a round Earth.

The Divine Comedy by Dante portrays a spherical Earth and that was in the late 13th  early 14th centuries

Also, the Vikings made it to North America before Columbus.

the most important thing for FE is to discredit nearly all of RE proof in one fell swoop.
The Conspiracy.
otherwise, they will be all like: "Nasa this" and "Nasa that".

after that, corner them with the media/society telling them the shape of the earth and them never finding out or questioning it.
follow up with bendy light, the ice wall, the UA and the argument is in the bag.

To be fair this Forum does frequently showcase people who despite being correct in assuming the EArth is a sphere are totally unable to justify this belief if unable to apeal to authority or photographs from space, and are quickly reduced to Angry Ranting type posts. Which is frightening because one gets the impression they'd be just as in favor of the FET is that was what they were raised in judging by their nonexistent ability to think critically.

I blame the schools

We humans are social spunges, put us in a luke warm ignorance sink and after a few years we are practically dripping with the stuff.

Hardly, take one of us that is sufficiently intelligence, and he'll fix as much ignorance as he can, and learn from the ignorance of those around him.
