Why a conspiracy?
« on: July 01, 2008, 03:39:16 PM »
I have been wondering, why would the US/NASA/Everyone want to keep FE secret? is it bad or something? Did they run out of conspiracy ideas?

It's simple.  Logically it would cost a lot more to actually have a space program than to fake it.  So NASA puts a small percentage of its government funding towards upholding the lie, and pockets the rest.

But if Earth were flat, why pretend to make an agency? it would save them more just to not even try.

begin with 100 billion dollars.

real space agency: 80 billion

Fake space agency:60 billion

no space agency: 0 dollars

Result: Real: 20 billion left

Fake: 40 billion left

None: 100 billion left

No.

Government: -100 billion dollars
Real space agency: spends all 100 billion dollars on the space program.
Fake space agency: spends 20 billion dollars on the space program (an arbitrary figure, but I'm just following suit).
Real space agency profit: 0
Fake space agency profit: 80 billion dollars.

NASA makes out quite handsomely.

The money would not come out of the pockets of the legislators; they just allocate where it is spent (or not spent, as in this case).

Of course, there is also the possibility of the government being as duped as everyone else.

The government, as a general body, is completely in the dark about the existence of the conspiracy.  Essentially, NASA is stealing from the government.

Early 1400's is my best bet. Some have it pegged later.

There are conflicting theories.  Some say its origins lie in the Bavarian Globe Makers Guild as far back as the 12th century.  Others point to the Royal Astronomical Society of the 19th century.  Of course, its most modern incarnation (however long it might have lasted in its various guises) truly began with the so-called space race of the 50s and 60s.

I understand how NASA would profit through a conspiracy, but what would people from as far back as 1400 have to gain from it?  Also, it seems a bit strange to me that the American and Soviet Space programs would have to work together in the middle of the Cold War to keep things a secret.  It seems like the Soviets might have more to gain by proving the Americans and their round earth theories wrong during that point in time.

Like the US government, the Soviet government was likely completely in the dark about the conspiracy.  And remember, they were the first ones to put something into orbit, not us.

The conspiracy theory proposed by flat Earth is laughably inconsistent. In several threads it has been claimed that the governments are part of the conspiracy, yet in others it is claimed that the goverments of the world are being fooled. Not to mention that every single airline pilot and ship captain in the world would need to be in on the conspiracy, as they would be the first to notice that their flight and shipping routes are sometimes longer or shorter than expected.

Additionally, space agencies would need to be able to provide real time "fake" satellite data to governments and other organisations, for example reconaissance to the US goverment during the Iraq war. Strangely, this reconaissance data seems to be incredibly accurate. Is NASA flying around the world in secret, invisible spy planes?

The fact remains that no one here has any kind of proof that there is a conspiracy. It's just a convenient excuse to prevent FET from being debunked by solid evidence.

It's as inconsistent as an essay assignment on the best country in the world. Opinions differ, get over it. This is evidence of nothing.

I agree that the inconsistency of opinions about the conspiracy theory is not substantial evidence against the theory itself. But the fact remains that the theory is just a theory. Even if everyone here were to agree on the details of the proposed conspiracy, the fact remains that there is no proof of its existence. It is, to put it into your words, evidence of nothing.

Pretty much. Not to mention, evidence of a conspiracy would be hard to come by, given what a conspiracy is, entails, and the negative association they contain.

Agreed. It's unfortunate because there are a few conspiracy theories I myself would like to see verified.
