Give me one logical reason the earth is flat part 3
« on: May 06, 2006, 11:25:10 AM »
I am still searching for a reason why someone would think the earth is flat in the first place. Einstein didn't just wake up one morning and think "You know, I bet that the speed of light is the only constant and that time and space are both relative to it" and then find ways to support this. He observed how light works and used prevoius scientific knowledge to come up with his theory.

Likewise, for FE theory to be an actual theory, not just a guess. It needs a reason why some one would think this.

No one in my previous threads could come up with a logical reason why the world is flat. So I ask you FEers, why do you think the world is flat?

Until ye sail the arctic, pacific, hell all of them oceans, ye don't know that there is an edge to the earth! I however have found no edge other than the deck of my ship. Explain me how that do be possible on a placemat earth like you Cubers think.

I wouldn't go that far. I choose to believe my perception of the overall shape of the world over popular theory.

Nowhere in that statement do I say I only believe what I can see with my eyes, as a rule. I just finished my third year studying electrical engineering, I'm very familiar with things you can't see but still exist. All I said was that, in the case of the earth, I trust my eyes more than NASA.

And sven, I'm not religious.

Seriously, sven, you should have your eyes checked.  A disproportionately large number of your posts indicate you have a linguistic "blind spot" of some sort.

He didn't say he only believes what he sees with his eyes; just that he does believe what he sees with his eyes.

Thus seeing with his eyes is a sufficient but not a necessary condition for belief for him.

... May I ask what does my eyes have to do with language... I was just trying to point out something, If his proof that the world is flat because he looks out of his window and sees a flat world. As we all know since the world is too big to see any curviture when so close...

ok... When you eventually go to the Eiffe Tower, (I really reccomend this, tis a beautiful site :)) look out to the horizen (which straight away dis-proofs the FE theory) and notice that the ground curves in on it's self, if the ground was flat it wouldn't do this... It would look like this...

   /   \

(poor example but those who did graphics when in high school would know what i'm getting at...) I believe it would look like things get so far that they dissapear into a triganluar PoV... it's hard to discribe, try to picture a road in artists drawings notice that they triangulate to a certian point... This is what would happen if the world was flat, since this doesn't and instead things get hidden below the horizen it's hard to imagine a flat world when things dissapear below the ground.

OK,So I will readily accept any "LOGICAL REASONS" that earth is flat.I searched a lot and guess what? 0 LOGICAL REASONS were found!(Please consider flag of UN and satellite photos being fake are not logical reasons)sounds great right? As many others mentioned the earth looks flat because it has a very large radius compared to your size and it seems to be flat. And if you base your beliefs on your sight, then the roads should be triangular end at horizon while they don't.I have 3 simple question which can be explained by spherical earth theory but not with flat earth theory:

1)Why is there molten rock (magma) below the surface of earth and inside volcanoes (In other words what creates the energy required to heat all those rocks to melt)?(if it's a core how is the liquid stable around the Antarctica  and doesn't flow from the edge , melting down Antarctica)

2)How can you detect north pole and south pole using a compass as such a magnetic field is impossible to exist in a flat earth other than saying: there are two mono-pole magnets ,1 at north pole and a ring shaped mono-pole at south pole (and consider the fact that magnetic mono-poles don't exist to this day) but it's simply explainable by imagining a dipole magnet at the center of the spherical earth

3)As the tectonic plates move, the overall shape of the earth doesn't change,if the earth was flat by moving tectonic plates the edges of Antarctica should move rapidly or the total surface area of earth should increase in all directions to keep it a disc

PS. THE EARTH IS FLAT FOR YOU IF YOU ARE TRAVELING AT  99.9999999999991% of speed of light towards earth which is kinda impossible for humans.

I will accept that earth is flat when someone answers these 3 questions with logical reasons that fit together.(I also could prove gravity and acceleration but the post would have became too long to read)

If we examine a true picture of the distant horizon, or the thing itself, we shall find that it coincides exactly with a perfectly straight and level line. Now, since there could be nothing of the kind on a globe, and we find it to be the case all over the Earth, it is a proof that tire Earth is not a globe.

If we look at the horizon at sea on a clear day it is a sharp crisp line! On the the flat earth it would be a hazy blur because all that limits our range of vision is the scattering in the atmosphere.

Also on the globe the horizon is exactly the same all around us and almost precisely at eyelevel so of course it looks a straight line!

So, you proof means nothing. You di see curvature at very high altitude, which FEers "explain away" as being the "sunlit part of the earth.

It is certain that the theory t)f the Earth’s rotundity and thatof its mobility must stand or fall together. A proof, then, of its immobilityis virtually a proof of its non-rotundity. Now, that theEarth does not move, either on an axis, or in an orhit round the Sunor anything else, is easily proven. If the Earth went through spaceat the rate of eleven-hundred miles in a minute of time, as astronomersteach 138, in a particular direction, there would unquestionably b e adifference in the result of firing off a projectile in that direction andin a direction the opposite of that one. But as, in fact, there is notthe slightest difference in any such case, it is clear that any allegedmotion of the Earth is disproved, and that, therefore, the Earth is not a globe

Not at all. Both of those projectiles would simply be fired relative to the moving earth (I get closer to 1,111 miles/min).  One would be travelling at 1,111 miles/min less the muzzle velocity, the other at 1,111 miles/min plus the muzzle velocity.

Relative to the earth they are simply moving left and right at the muzzle velocity.

So,  it is clear that any alleged motion of the Earth has been neither proven nor disproven, and therefore, the Globe Earth has not been disproven.

So, back to the drawing board!

How to prove that the earth rotates!
Go ask a competent ships navigator how a "marine gyro-compass" works or
ask a surveyor who uses a "gyro-theodilite" how it works.

Both of these instruments rely on the Earth's rotation to work.
