Do you guys believe this?
« on: March 17, 2008, 02:48:00 PM »
Hi guys, I have read quite a lot of stuff on this site, and I have a genuine question. I want to know honestly if you believe the flat earth theory. Please don't think I'm taking the p***, I wouldn't have registered just to have a go! I'm also wondering what sort of people this appeals to - are forum members mainly American, British etc? And in general, what are peoples religious views? Is this theory strongly linked to say, creationism, or is it totally separate? Also, are people who are into this theory into other conspiracy theories (e.g. The World Trade Centre, JFK, UFO's etc)?

Just to let you know, as an Astronomer I personally know (or strongly believe from the calculations I have to do!) that the Earth is a sphere. Again, don't think I'm trying to be inflammatory, I'm just interested from a human psychology point of view.

Thanks.

Utterly separate, creationism is silly

Tom apparently beleives the earth is an infanite plane, which is even more rubbish then the flat earth theory.

Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute. I think we're not using the same co-ordinate system... OK, lets define X as parallel to a trip from East to West, Y as parallel a North - South trip, and Z as directly into the ground. Which two are infinite? I think you mean X and Y are infinite, correct, because if Z is, Sokarul is right.
Proof the Earth is round!

Two dimensions of the 3 spacial dimensions are infinite.

Width as X
Depth as Y
Height as Z

Well, even if I said X and Z are, its the same thing, just sideways, which doesnt really effect anything.

Well you see a infinite mass below us would have quite a strong gravitational field.  Way stronger than 9.8m/s^2.

The pull of a horizontally infinite earth is finite and approx 9.8m/s2. Do you disagree?

What's under the horizontally infinite earth which must be infinite in every direction, thus creating this infinite pull? Unless there's layers, which would cause the same problem. Do you believe in the UA? Sorry, but I'm more familiar with normal FET, rather than planar earth.

The horizontal earth cuts the universe in half, one assumes that on the other side is a similar set of heavens.  We strongly suspect there is a submoon also that causes diurnal tides.

There isn't infinite pull.  There is finite pull.

Sorry, I thought you theorised with the Earth on top of something, like I say, I'm not too familiar with PET. So what you mean is there could be a whole other Earth on the other side of ours, but we could only access it and the other half of the Universe by drilling a hole through the Earth, but other than that, it's pretty much mainstream science for gravity and stuff. If so, I get PET now

Yeah I do.  You said it was infinitely long and infinity thick below us.  Nothing infinite = 9.8m/s^2.

I said it was infinite in two dimensions.

Infinite Flat Earth Thickness and Gravitational Pull

Using Gauss's law:

Alternately, you can integrate:
Apply

to an infinite slab of density , obtaining

where A is the area of the "pillbox," G is the gravitational constant, and h is the thickness of the slab. Therefore, the gravitational acceleration is given by

Source:Wolfram.com

Either way, a < 2*pi*G*D*t for an infinite plane with thickness t

Plug in 2500 kg/m^3 for D,  9.81m/s/s for a and we find a minimum 9000 km for the thickness, t.

Ok.  but that has nothing to do with the fact that an infinite thick earth would have a gravitation greater than 9.8m/s^2.
