so, some FErs claim the South mangetic pole is "under" the earth!

No, the magnetic South Pole is in the center of the FE.  It's the magnetic North that is under the FE.

(sarcasm) which is why compasses point south...

it is possible to stand right on top of the north magnetic pole AND the south magnetic pole.

if earth was flat, people would have to go UNDER it to reach one of them!

is that simple enough for you to understand?

Just to point out... if you were to hold your average dime-store compass straight up and down (or perpendicular to the ground I should say) it is no longer accurate. It simply starts trying to "level itself" and the point-needle will simply stick to the backing or float in/out according to your direction from magnetic North / South.

Perfect example. Go buy a dial compass, and a 'water-compass' as they are sometimes called - basically a polarized ball with markings inside of a clear ball filled w/ water. dial compass flakes out when pointed up and down, the floating ball simply rights itself any time you try to spin it. The end. eh?

hold a compass on it's edge, and walla, up or down.

oh. i hadn't read that far back. a quote woulda been nice.

But if there was only a north pole, compasses would still work.

A south pole magnet would still point to the center and the north pole would simply swing in the opposite direction.

Do you actually read through the posts? Or do you just enjoy antagonizing me in the forums?
Either way is fine, I'd just like to know up front since it seems you keep intentionally excluding pertinent information from your posts when quoting me.

For instance in this situation there is an entire post that this quote is referring to. If you can't see the point of it, then I don't see how I can help you understand how a compass works. You seem intelligent enough. I'd think you could google it if nothing else?

Simple - you have a magnetic thin strip of anything, compass needle or not. put it on a fulcrum of some kind, it will rotate towards a polar opposite right? ok, hold it upright, that thin piece of magnetic material is going to smack against the backing the fulcrum is projecting up from trying to get to it's original polar opposite it was trying to reach in the first place. It's not rocket science... eh?

Right.  Now how is that relevant to the discussion?

Apparently so.. you're doing it again, just look at your last comment here...

Right.  Now how is that relevant to the discussion?

It's relevant due to the fact that this thread has progressed towards a compass variant of the original question regarding continuous travel around the RE model globe. How is it not relevant? I was just answering a question that you have now forced me to answer again just to explain why I answered it in the first place.

Reference your own post in response to how one would know they were at the poles? Then reference that back to someone thinking you could hold it upright for a FE model.

You are just antagonizing me and that's the obvious truth. Either that or you just overlooked one of the posts. Either way, what's the big deal? I explained a simple truth and you act like it's not relevant to a discussion that it's in current discussion of... if it makes you feel better, I can make this my last post in this thread. Does that work out better?

Ah, but you aren't special. It is the common FE strategy of asking questions to lead the thread off topic.
Example:
1. FE is impossible for reason A
2. What about reason B?
....and a long discussion takes place about B until A is long forgotten. If its not forgotten they ignore you.

Take it as a compliment meaning your winning.  ;)
If I was asked to imagine a perfect deity, I would never invent one that suffers from a multiple personality disorder. Christians get points for originality there.

He wasn't though. He went off topic on his own and was paying attention to dumb posts.

The thing everyone needs to realize is you don't need 2 poles on the surface. Since every magnet has a NORTH AND SOUTH pole, you only need a North pole for the compass to work.

Since every magnet has a NORTH AND SOUTH pole, you only need a magnetic field for the compass to work.

Actually I was paying very close attention, and the compass / magnetic poles was simply an offshoot of the original issue. Geez you people.

Also, I hate to burst your bubble, but there's a lot more to how a compass works with the Earth's "poles" than you seem to realize. You can't just have a single North Pole and call it good (we'll use north pole for this discussion). A magnetic field does not exist without having both N and S poles for one thing, beyond that, the Earth's magnetic field is *not* perfect. Therfore when navigating with a compass, if all you had was a single point from which to navigate from, you would have to redefine all the navigational information handed down over the ages.

Such as "Take this heading along this reading" - it wouldn't work the way you're implying. Just stop and think about it for a minute. Not to mention the problems you would have with natural ferrous deposits and even man-made magnetic interferences along your way, would be doubly amplified by having only one pole.

The needle on your compass would be ineffectual on nearly 1/4 of the Earth if not more! See what I mean?

Here is a youtube video on how a complicated Marine compass is made. It will give you an idea of what the counter 'forces' are involved in allowing a compass to work in the first place.

you are still arguing semantics!

ok, one more try: start at the equator, longitude 0n,0e. (near the coast of africa)
then go north, following the latitude line till 90n,0e. (the north pole)
then follow the opposite latitude to 0n,180e. (near hawaii)
then continue south to 90s,0e. (the south pole)
then follow the first latitude line again, and you wind up back at 0n,0e!
thus circumnavigating the world North/South!

get the point yet?

::) For the love of God THE WHOLE POINT IS 'SEMANTICS'!

let me repeat my point once more for those who missed it:

on RE, it is possible to circumnavigate the world north-south.
on FE it is impossible to circumnavigate the world north-south; you would fall off the edge or keep going forever!

BUT: on the ACTUAL world we ACTUALLY LIVE IN it IS possible, just as i described in my thread you just quoted.

i re-phased it like that because someone kept repeating "you can't go farther south than the south pole, so you can't circimnavigate" which is just semenatics!
