get in an airplane. fly east. you WILL return back to where you started. fly north, you WILL return back to where you started, fly in any direction and you will always return back to where you started.

Better still. guys, get off the internet and get a job that makes millions, go on a space flight, and you will see that the earth IS in fact round.

is this site for real. are you guys for real. i honestly think this site proves how gullible some people are

Hi Lammi, welcome to this forum.  I happen to fall into the round-earth side of the question.  In my opinion, evidence supplied by contemporary sources is sufficient to suggest that the world is a sphere, not flat.  There are others on this site who feel otherwise.  I have added a poll to see exactly how people feel regarding this question in a topic titled 'fe or re'.  I am interested to see how things turn out in the poll.  Currently, the Re-ers are ahead 12 - 9.
"Do you think the earth is flat or round?"

You make me want to cry in laughter. ;D

You, my friend. actually i take that back, it would suck to be your friend (not that you'd have any outside of this forum)

cut a long story short. this has gone way too far, it has gone way past common sense, and you guys are taking science TOO far, you have thought SO hard and done such complex equations and elaborate google searches, that in the end, when you do realize the earth is round. You're going to be nothing. all those years spent sitting behind the computer screen with your glasses on and your mouse hand growing stronger, will have been for nothing. I suggest you buy a bike. And also a ticket to the bahamas.

If you simply CANNOT leave the computer. then i would recommend this site for you.

Works the same way on the FE.

Uh, no, you can't circumnavigate the Earth by flying North, in either model.

in RE, you could circumnavigate earth by going north or south far enough. of course, you would pass the north or south pole, so IN A SENSE, you would no longer be going farther north, but back south, or vise-versa.

but Tom Bishop claims that if you went south, you would keep going forever and ever and ever...

other FErs say if you went south you would fall off the edge, or be stopped by the ice wall, or soldiers from "the conspiracy" would force you to stop.

the FACT that many people have ACTUALLY crossed antactica they totally DENY!
they are so blind it's laughable!

Right, so circumnavigation by going north or south is not possible in either model.  Glad that is settled.

If you followed a compass North, you'd have a hard time reaching the North pole anyways.

WRONG! someone on the RE COULD go from the north pole to the south pole, then back along the OPPOSITE side, thus circumnavigating the world north-south!

look at this map:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:CircumnavigationByTrades.png

the red line is the actual course, the yellow line is the ANTIPODE: the exact opposite side of the earth from the actual course. this is a sailing ship going east-west.

or plot a north-south course using THIS map:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Usgs_map_traverse_mercator.PNG
that's a map that does not have the north pole in the center!

oh, you don't even need a spaceship: a jet airplane would be good enough.
check the other thread, something about "mig 31"!

The whole point is that you can't keep only going north or only going south and end up back where you started ::)

in the RE model you can, in the FE model you can't.

but in the REAL world we actually live in, people can!
so earth most be round!
it HAS BEEN DONE, so it IS possible!

In your head: start at the equator, travel north.  See if you can get back to where you started without ever stopping following north.  I believe you will run into some trouble once you hit the north pole.

you are still arguing semantics!

ok, one more try: start at the equator, longitude 0n,0e. (near the coast of africa)
then go north, following the latitude line till 90n,0e. (the north pole)
then follow the opposite latitude to 0n,180e. (near hawaii)
then continue south to 90s,0e. (the south pole)
then follow the first latitude line again, and you wind up back at 0n,0e!
thus circumnavigating the world North/South!

get the point yet?

some FErs think the south magnetic pole is UNDER the FE, which is silly, since compasses would point up or down if that was true.

Why?  Compasses don't point to the poles... ???

no, they point along the magnetic fields, which would go up/down if the south magnetic pole was under the earth.
