Okay, I joined just to ask this question:

If the Earth is flat, why is there a horizon at all? Wouldn't you just see the "Ice Wall" at any given location? Since ships seem to "sink" when they leave a port, doesn't that prove that the Earth has curvature?

I don't think the government could possibly try to hold this up 24/7.

Wow.  Your name seems to say it all.  Great first post, you moron.  Try READING THE FAQ.

I hate to tell you this, but I'm pretty sure you're going to get referred to the FAQ on those. Both of those questions are addressed in the FAQ - bot original and 'new'.

I'd read those first, then come back here and possibly post a more specific question?

I'm not a Flat Earther, but seriously.... no matter how you slice it you don't have hundres of miles visibility on the clearest of days normally, much less thousands - especially at ground levels. Why would that be any different in a Flat Earth model? There's a start just as an example...

Take care,
John

I've read the FAQ in this section, and I don't remember reading anything about the horizon. I went back, and tried to find the word "horizon". It wasn't anywhere on there. If you'd quote it for me, I'll admit that I'm an ignorant moron.

Thanks for a constructive reply. Um... can you explain the ships?

Atoms and molecules are not transparent and so distant objects will be faded with distance. For example, notice how these distant mountains tend to fade out and become discolored with distance. That's because the atmosphere is not perfectly transparent. When you look through the atmosphere you are looking through a fog of atoms and molecules. If the earth had no atmosphere those distant mountains would be as clear and sharp as the foreground.

Perhaps the most visually stunning fact which proves the earth as a plane is the sinking ship effect. As a ship recedes into the ocean's horizon, distant from the observer, it will appear to the naked eye to sink from the bottom up into the sea when it touches the horizon line. It has been found that this effect is purely perceptual, that a good telescope with sufficient zoom will change the observer's perspective and bring the ship's hull back in full view. This is not possible if the ship were really behind a "hill of water." Hence, the effect which is usually thought to prove the earth as a globe really proves it to be a plane.

How does your model of the earth explain these explicitly detailed accounts?

Easy.  They were "observed" by people who desperately wanted the world to be flat because otherwise they wouldn't be able to take their Bibles as literally true.
Where did you educate the biology, in toulet?

There is a horizon because there is something called a vanishing point in the laws of perspective, in which objects seem to disappear at eye level in your center of vision.

You can't see the ice wall because the atmosphere distorts the view.

Why you can't see ships as they disappear over the horizon?

Tom says it's because the Laws of Perspective are flawed. ::)

So you cannot explain this phenomenon I've described?

Are you admitting that your model is unable to explain these independent accounts by multiple observers which explicitly detail reports of sunken hulls reappearing by observing them through a telescope?

Are you admitting that your model of the earth is flawed?

That means I win.

You said the Laws of Perspective are flawed!  Namely the vanishing point!

Ooh multiple accounts?! Like 8 people?!! Holy Crap! That carries a lot more weight than the millions of accounts of seeing this 'phenomenon' to be false.

No, in RE the Laws of Perspective are fine, the vanishing point is an infinite distance away.

If you remember in the Wave Crests and Sunsets thread, you put the vanishing point a finite distance away, and later stated that the Laws of Perspective were flawed.

Millions of people have observed the sinking ship effect through a high powered telescope? I'd like to see some references and quotes for that claim.

Since you are unable to provide a coherent explanation for the accounts I've provided I'll go ahead and assume that you have none because your model of the earth is incorrect. Thanks.

No words mean everything!
Here's my proof! Gumby saw it firsthand!

Gumby's Diary:

6-66-66
Today I looked at a ship. The Mast was visible but the hull wasn't. I decide to look at it through a telescope and I saw that the hull was missing to the same extent.

So what's your explanation for these accounts? Perspective selectively picks portions of your eyesight to cut out of existence?

Also when he said that the earth was an infinite plane, which other FE'ers said was a load of crap.
