Since it's a society, is there any official membership beyond registering for the forum?

I'd go a few bucks for an official membership card and maybe a certificate. Might be an honest way to offset some of the expenses of running the forum.

I think the actual society is defunct since its founder died.  I could be wrong, though, seeing as I have nothing to do with the actual society.
