Confused...
« on: April 03, 2007, 08:26:39 AM »
Hi all,

i heard about this place in a book called: "The book of General Ignorance", it corrects common myths. in the book it stated that medieval people never thought that the world was flat and that this flat world theory originated afterwards, it also said that there were still people who believed that the earth is flat, and gave a link.  I've read a few threads and they just seem to be arguments, so can you just clarify why you think that the world is flat? if this is a cover up who gains what?

this link was on another thread, what happens if you head south, off the map?

I am very skeptical, do your best to convince me otherwise.

  • I don't trust everything I'm told.
  • Experiments in "Earth: Not a Globe" give evidence that the Earth is flat.
  • There must be a conspiracy since so many people believe the Earth is spherical

A handful of people have gone south in search of the edge of the Earth.  Most have not returned and the remaining never made it all the way.  Those that have not returned quite probably fell off the edge.

You should be skeptical.  They aren't the smartest on here.  They believe the Earth is flat based on a book that has so many errors its not even funny.   Not to mention they don't even understand the book.  If something doesn't fit there views it a government conspiracy.  If you go south there is an icewall but no one has ever seen it because its guarded 24/7.    So to sum it up, fe'ers (flat earth people) defy physics and logic.  On here you will find 2/3 posts are worthless because no one thinks the fe'ers are serious, although they claim they really do believe the earth is flat.

So if most people believed in flat earth it would be a conspiracy?

In that case it would not be working quite as well as it does now.

Yet these experiments can't be duplicated.

The experiments can all be easily duplicated, though most require travel to a specific location.  Have you attempted any of these experiments, or are you just assuming they are wrong because you believe the Earth is round?

People of Sam's time already tried to duplicate the results of his experiments and failed.  This has already been gone over.

We can tell how far asteroids and comets are from the earth but we cant get the distance to the sun right?  The sun argument alone proves the earth is round.  Just like your avatar.

    And why is that?
Because more people would know the truth, ergo the conspirators would not be as effective as they are now.

One can find the distance to the Sun using Eratosthenes' experiment.

    fair enough

I've not read this paper, but I'll bet for every experiment that proves the earth is flat there's one that proves otherwise.  i have now read the FAQ, its just seems like your clutching at straws for the sake of it.  If the earth is a disc how would it have formed, the round earth is based on gravity holding it together, how does the flat earth stay together?

i wouldn't say they 'probably' fell off the edge, they 'probably' died in the horrible cold conditions of Antarctica.

Still not convinced, there must be a reason why you believe this

Mostly by the strong, weak, and electromagnetic forces.  But the answer you're probably looking for is "uniform acceleration."

I'm having trouble understanding this too, Tom.  In "Flatland", the world was entirely 2-dimensional.  People laid flat on the world like paper on paper.  What does this have to do with Flat Earth theory?

The Milky Way is flat.  I can walk outside, look up,  and see that it's flat.  So what's the explanation for the equilibrium of our galaxy?

You just made the fatal mistake of answering a question with another question, thus proving you know nothing.  The FE theory is in dispute here not the RE one, so answer the damn question:

how would a flat earth have formed?

It's pretty simple, and it's been posted so often it makes me want to purge on you.
The Earth is flat. Many say otherwise.  Ergo, there must be a conspiracy.

how would a flat earth have formed?

A long time ago, space-time is warped by some massive event, creating a semi-uniform acceleration across immense regions of space.  Space-time distortions propagate only at the speed of light so there is a kind of shock-wave moving through the universe as the distortion progresses.  Loose matter is accelerated as the distortion propagates, impacting upon other non-accelerated matter.  As more and more matter clumps together from these impacts, the mass is flattened by the impact force of inertial particles.  Over time, a very large and very flat object is created.

Many people like base ball, but it is in fact, shit. so there must be a conspiracy on that basis.
Its that sort of argument that makes everyone think FE'ers are cretins.

This how ever is much better, its constructive.  Wouldn't it be possible under this model for other shapes to have been produced other than flat ones?

i'd like to see a list of names of people that traveled to the edge and didn't come back. if there is an ice wall, doea that mean they climbed it and fell off of it onto the other side: space? even if they got to the ice wall, i thought it was gaurded 24/7....so how could they have even gotten close enough to fall off?

i hate mashed potatoes....but everyone around me loves them and thinks i'm crazy for not....their must be a conspiracy to this.
