Footballer arrested to hide faked moonwalk
The Independent (London)
July 22, 1994, Friday

Quote

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The Apollo moonwalk 25 years ago may have been an illusion. That's the belief of 9 per cent of Americans surveyed in a recent poll. The survey, published in the Washington Post, found that black people were the most sceptical: 20 per cent said it is possible the Apollo moon landing never took place on 20 July, 1969, while 16 per cent were unsure.

"It was a way for the government to hide some more of the money they've blown," 40-year-old Debbie Dunham told the newspaper. "Of course, blacks are going to be more sceptical. They have probably less reason to believe the government than anybody."

Some sceptics believe there is a broader government plot to fool the public.

Charles Johnson, president of the anti-space Flat Earth Society, said the hoax was exposed in the 1978 film Capricorn One, in which the United States fakes a Mars landing. One actor in that film was the former football star O J Simpson, who is now accused of two murders. According to Mr Johnson, the
film "proved the entire government space programme is a hoax. They're finally going after O J because he helped unmask the space hoax."

That's the best you've got?  You're using a fictional movie to prove that the moon-landing was a hoax, which you only believe is a hoax because the "Earth-rise" photo taken proves that the Earth is round.  And you'd think that if this work of fiction exposed anything don't you think that the government would have tried to take out the director, or writer, or get funding cut off before the movie was released?  And not try and get one of its actors convicted 16 years after the film was released?
like my Earth the same way I like my breasts... round!

I find this article hard to believe, especially considering that "skeptical" has been consistently misspelled...

"Sceptical" is the way Brits spell the word.  You should crack open a dictionary or something before you base your disbelief on misinformation.  (No, I don't believe the Earth is flat.  I know it's round.  But you are as bad as the flat-Eathers if you run around mistakenly claiming a misspelling is all the disproof of the article you need.)

If the  Americans had walked on the moon they would by now (some 40 years later) have built a self-contained holiday centre offering cut price tourist trips. They would have also have built a military base instead of proposing the Strategic Defence Initiative and would not be operating meaningless space shuttle projects (two of which exploded) just outside Earth's atmosphere

Do you know what it costs to get a one-kilogram object out of Earth's gravity well?

Turns out telecommunications is at least as net-profitable as hotels on the moon.

But you raise an interesting point.  Obviously the ocean floor has never been visited; had people been there, they certainly would have built hotels there too.

I may have disproved my own theory that the moon landings were hoaxes. Am I right in thinking that the US President throughout the whole series of landings was one Mr Nixon. Now there's someone who would never tell a lie !!!!!!!

You are right in thinking that.  But I suppose that, considering the unlikelihood that you have never in your life told a lie, I should conclude that everything you say is in fact a lie.

While we're on the topic of disproving your hoax theory, do you have any response to our answer as to why there is no Disney Land on the moon?  or are you just dropping that (admittedly shortsighted) approach?

I see what you mean.
Disneyland on the moon would be more of a "wow" than Disneyland Paris has been - I trust that there is no opposition to that premise.
I rather favour a giant Mickey Mouse welcoming all and sundry to the moon on "cheap day savers" and that would really convince me of the moon landings _ Everybody loves Mickey!!

Nixon was also one of the most candid presidents after resigning. Pretty much telling us everything we wanted to know about the goings on that happened during his term, shady or not... Probably because the only way he was going to regain a decent legacy in the eyes of the US populace was by coming clean. TBHO I don't think he did anything more illegal or wrong then many other presidents had done before him, I find him a rather good president infact. W/E, this is not a thread about Nixon

This "gran the man" guy is obviously not from the US and has nothing but stereotypes of americans to run off of here.

Actually the engineers who headed up the project knew that there would be no wind in space and that a fabric flag would be far to weak to stand up to the extreme temperatures of the unhindered light of the sun so the flag was made out of a sheet of metal, warped to make it look like it was blowing in the wind.

Even if the moon landing was faked, it is in no way connected to the ... "flat earth" theory.  It would have been done to compete with the Russians.

The flag was not metal.  It was stowed during the flight folded, and when it was unfolded on the moon, the creases couldn't just be ironed out.  That is why in still photographs, it appears to be in motion.  But if the video is watched, the flag remains motionless for about 30 minutes.
