I appreciate that you came back to this thread.
He's talking about the nature of knowledge.
Exactly. That's why I wrote "
Please read the whole article. It is important to understand the context and Orwell's intention with this article."
You are correct, he likely doesn't believe it(=flat earth). He clearly knows the truth though.
Exactly. But the only truth we can be sure he knew is that the world is not flat. Anything further is speculation.
You still don't understand the book.
Enlighten me. What did I not understand? How comes you know what I understood and what not?
If you seriously think we're right now living in a world similair to what Orwell described, you're a maniac.
Intelligent minds will know.

Quickly coming back to your quote:
'How does one man assert his power over another, Winston?’
Winston thought. ‘By making him suffer,’ he said.
‘Exactly. By making him suffer. Obedience is not enough. Unless he is suffering, how can you be sure that he is obeying your will and not his own? Power is in inflicting pain and humiliation. Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing. Do you begin to see, then, what kind of world we are creating?
You quotet this because "
I particularly like this excerpt which seems very pertinent to my last point". So what was your last point?
If they don't see us (Flat Earthers) as a threat I imagine. Their wide reaching arms are far better served making an example of us by creating an environment that shuns flat earthers and others that have 'wacky' ideas.
I fail to see the context of how your quote would support your point.
