Last year at a track meet in Texas Karmelo Anthony stabbed and killed Austin Metcalf. This week his trial came to an end, and he was convicted of murder (idk what degree) and was sentenced to 35 years.
None of this should be national or international news! I don't know who first made this hit the news. Was it the family fundraising? Was it rightwing agitators? Was it media looking for a juicy racialized story? Most murders of regular (i mean not famous) people never make the news, except locally. This was intentionally blown up, but idk who did it or why.
If you try to look up the facts of the case, you will find articles written with bias one way or the other. I can't even figure out what is true and what isn't. For example, someone in Karmelo Anthony's family supposedly raised over $600,000 for his defense, but (depending on which news source you read) apparently the family spent most of the money on themselves, but they did hire a lawyer, just not a $600,000 lawyer. Many articles will say that the jury was "all white", but apparently there were Asians and Indians on the jury, too. Nobody wants jury duty in the US, so I'm not surprised there weren't any black jurors. Jury duty is dreaded by anyone who receives a notice.
Anyway, I think this part is true - next to the track, the different schools had their own tents (I assume to be in the shade or out of the rain, idk about track meets). Karmelo went into the tent of the opposing school, he was asked to leave, he refused and Austin shoved him. Karmelo pulled a knife out of his backpack and stabbed Austin in the heart.
Now there are people threatening Austin Metcalf's family, the witnesses, and trying to doxx the jurors. There are also people threatening Karmelo Anthony's family, and harassing them with racist messages.
