In my device manager there are two separate adapters, the Ethernet one says "Realtek Gaming GBE Family Controller" and the wifi one says "Realtek RTL8821CE 802.11ac PCIe Adapter".

Based on that, do you think they still (possibly) work through the same interface?

At this point I am just puzzled by the behavior of the adapter. It's not that much trouble to restart it and it works perfectly afterwards, but I find it very weird that so many people have the same issue, and I have found people talking about it in posts almost 10yrs old, and there's no apparent solution. I have seen people say Realtek hardware is crap! Which also makes me wonder why big pc manufacturers use their products. Probably they are cheap.
Looks like the gaming controller is for the LAN cable and the RTL8821ce is the wifi adapter.  I would suggest disabling (but not necessarily uninstalling) one adapter or the other.  Having 2 adapters going at the same time could mean that they are tripping over each other when trying to wake back up and the computer might be trying to wake up the wrong adapter.

In the Control panel - network connections the wifi says it is not connected. Do you think I should disable it in device manager?
I'm sorry. Am I to understand that when you have a boner you like to imagine punching the shit out of Tom Bishop? That's disgusting.

Just for grins and giggles, disable the wired connection and see if you have the same problem with wifi.

I was thinking about doing that! I will try it tomorrow.

In the past I've used magic packets to wake up remote computers.

At Langley?

SCG how old is your device?
If you're using the built in wifi in an older desktop you're going to have troubles no matter what. Can help to use a usb wifi adapter. If your Ethernet isn't working properly.

They can also be used to sniff Croutons magic packets. Yuck smells like compromise, and selling out.

Why would that be inciting terrorism?  Lorddave was merely describing a type of shop we have here in the US, a bomb-gun shop.  A shop that sells bomb-guns.

No, the Ethernet adapter on my PC.

Your card is probably faulty / too old.
Switch to a usb wifi adapter and see if the issue persists. I didn't ask, when your PC disconnects, is it just the Ethernet or the wifi also?

For example does your phone disconnect from your internet when your PC does?

I've got a PC which I think needs a new cmos battery because it has intermittent starting issues. It will only boot after unplugging it for 12 hours. I replaced the power supply, reseated the processor, installed new ram and tried a different graphics card but I can't figure it out.

I'm hopeful a new cmos battery will fix it. Otherwise its a faulty board, I'm not sure. It's a good board.

It's a brand new computer.

Only the ethernet disconnects, the phone and the wifi still work. I just restart the adapter and it works fine. I haven't had to do it for several days, but I'm sure it will mysteriously start happening again.

That's weird. You won't lose any speed using a wifi card. Not on 10mbps is there any reason you prefer Ethernet?

I do because of the latency.

My computer is right next to the modem, tbh I didn't even realize this desktop has a wifi adapter until I started trying to figure out why I had to restart the ethernet adapter all the time. I thought I had a bad modem for a long time, so I restarted that every time I lost internet for awhile. Then I started troubleshooting. I opened youtube on the tv (via wifi) and the videos played even though the desktop said I was offline. I don't usually look at the TV while I am on the computer, so it hadn't crossed my mind to test it this way. Anyway, after determining that the modem is not the issue, I started searching for others having the same problem with a sleepy ethernet adapter. Another reason I blamed the modem, was that I had an old computer and it started happening while I was still using it, then the problem happened with the new computer. lol

Now I'm thinking there was an update that caused the issue.

See, this person was having the same issue, with the same adapter about 3 years ago. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/sleep-mode-disabling-ethernet-connection/a1d3db37-bc28-4c82-9c75-b7c0ebe946c0  I can find even older posts, like from about 2016, but this one explains it really well, and the answer from an "independent advisor".

It's a new thing. They've only got them recently now Ethernet is no longer in style.

Well I wish you luck. I've moved and I don't have any internet's except mobile data currently.

Oh snap, I just realized... Check your bios.  Could be in there that's keeping the green ethernet on.  Windows settings won't do much against bios settings.
You have been ignored for common interest of mankind.

It's not just you SCG.

If something like that happens for an extended period society breaks down. People don't appreciate how fragile things are now.

The competency crisis is so real. It's sad, people who otherwise would have made brilliant scientists and engineers have been pushed out of the way for the sake of diversity and all their constructive autism gets focussed on doing dissertations far above PhD level on n64 games instead.
