Ponds sure are different across the pond.
My dad just dug a big hole, with terraces, lined it with a plastic sheet, filled it from the tap, waited a few weeks. Introduced oxygenating plants and water lilies to give shade, waited a few months for them to get settled then added some Golden Orf and some green Tench.
Within a few years we had frogs, Newts, dragonflies, pond skaters, whirligigs, after a Heron turned up and ate the Orf the insect life proliferated, and they became the attraction.
