When i go into the smiley settings the crying smiley is still there, and the crying smiley image is still there. idk why it won't work.

I tried to upload the cry smiley and I got a message that says something about it being unwriteable.

This is the message:

The following smiley directories are not writable: default, classic, Lots_O_Smileys, aaron, akyhne

I don't have a sandbox SMF set up anymore to even try to help point you in the right direction. But the smiley is there, it shouldn't need to be reuploaded, it should just need to be remapped to the key binding that looks like the crying face.

That is true, and I don't understand why. I looked at the smileys in the admin console and it's the same as all the other working smileys. I even turned it off and back on again!

It is the only one with a ' character.

Are you able to assign it a different code?

Looking into it more, the code to get the message takes the ' and turns it into '
But the code which does that for the smiley code instead magically turns it into '
As they aren't the same, it doesn't work.

This should effect any smiley with a ' as part of its code.

It is specifically in the function entity_fix__callback, which is called for user messages before they are saved in the database.
It takes the entity '
breaks it apart to get the number 039, which it casts to an int as 39 and then back into a string.

If you add a new smiley, with the code
Code: [Select]
:'(, which is set to hidden, it will then catch the existing cry smiley codes. (but if you try to change the existing one, then new smileys will be entered as that which is further encoded breaking it).

I've heard that apparently there can be some weirdness with apostrophes if the code's getting confused between generic notepad-esque apostrophes and fancier smart-quote Word apostrophes.

I looked at the other smileys and the cry one was the only one with an apostrophe, so I reckon if I changed the code on something else to have an apostrophe it would also break.

The processing before saving a message converts this to

But the processing for the smiley to check both options converts it to
Code: [Select]
'Because they don't match, it breaks.

If you set the code for the smiley back to
Code: [Select]
:'( and in addition you add a smiley, with the same gif, with the code
Code: [Select]
:'( and set it to hidden, then it should work.
