PicoBlaze computer
« on: February 12, 2022, 02:13:22 AM »
Does anybody here have access to a real PicoBlaze computer? Could you please help me diagnose the problem with my "Decimal to Binary" example (second example from the left-hand-side) in the simulator I have made, why it did not work on real hardware when I tested it (although it works in the simulator)? I have also asked this on StackOverflow, but I got no useful response.

Looks like they are not computers rather they are microcontrollers. The pico pi may be related.

Perhaps your simulator isn't as accurate as you thought.

I concur. It seems incredibly likely that the source of the issue here has something to do with the way the simulator is simulating the Pico. Have you investigated that yet, FlatAssembler?

No, FPGA is "Field-programmable gate array", a device which is capable of running code written in hardware description languages such as Prolog or VHDL at high speed. Where the way the logic gates are connected can be changed on run-time (unlike other digital electronical devices, where it is fixed during the production).

Stack Exchange first?  Obviously you should have directly come to the Flat Earth society for help on an 8 bit microcontroller.

Let's start with some basics.  I assume you're a student?  So you have access to a computer lab with this PicoBlaze?  Have you gotten this PicoBlaze to do anything?  I feel that we're looking at not so much a software issue but some basic configuration.

You are not actually writing HDL but assembly that executes on a software cpu implemented on the spartan3 correct?  If so have you verified that you've loaded the bitstream correctly?

Is this a picoblaze by itself or is it part of a dev kit?  If so which dev kit.

If you can rebuild the fpga then I'd try rebuilding it with a debug core.  Add all your uart signals to ILA so you can see what's going on.  If your signals are actually toggling like they should then check your uart registers against the datasheet.  If that looks good then connect an oscope to tx out of the uart and see if anything is happen.  The datasheet for the uart usually has some very specific instructions that should be followed like scripture.

Good luck.

Well, I used to have it before I passed all the laboratory exercises from my Computer Architecture course that involved PicoBlaze. Now I do not have it anymore. And it would be hard to gain access to it again because, first of all, it is a pandemic, and, secondly, I have had to take a break from studying at the university because of my psychiatrical problems.

Oh crap, that's $220us
Does it need to be that microcontroller?

Ok fine, I'll make a serious response. Is there a particular reason you are hung up on PicoBlaze? As opposed to something much more readily accessible like an Arduino or literally any other programmable microcontroller? Is it because your goal is to make a PicoBlaze simulator? Or is there a larger goal here?

I'm guessing his class assignment is on a PicoBlaze.

If the intention of his class is to study HDL or fpgas in general then a pi probably wouldn't be a good substitute.

I kind of figure it has to be an instructor-led requirement at this point, I was just curious. I'd be lying if I said I had never self-imposed a framework on myself just because I wanted to figure out to make it do a thing that I wanted it to do.
