Supposedly they have a bunch of new Stingers and Javelins, so they should have a little more on their side in terms of SAM artillery now.

I've read that we're sending them something more advanced than the manpads they've been using so far.

I've also read that Russia is getting 16000 "volunteers" from Syria.

So if a world War breaks out then it's nato against Russia, Belarus and Syria so far.

That would be interesting considering Turkey is a part of NATO.

I think it's just the right's way of promoting the war. The left call for a sweet sounding "no fly zone" and the right say "OMG THE NEW LAB LEAK".  Whatever it takes to get us into another war so the military industrial complex can keep on cranking out war machines.

I still love Tulsi. She says dumb shit sometimes, but which one of them doesn't?

Supposed leak from FSB insider...

According to a whistleblower in Russia’s FSB (what was the KGB), there are no options for a possible victory for Putin in Ukraine, only defeat. The FSB analyst also adds —

Quote

1. FSB was not forewarned of the invasion of Ukraine, and was unprepared to deal with the effects of crippling sanctions.
2. The Chechen hit squad sent to kill President Zelensky was wiped out by Ukrainian forces. But even if Zelensky had been killed, Russia would have little chance of occupying Ukraine.
3. An estimated 10,000 Russian soldiers have been killed so far. [This tallies with Ukrainian claims but is double Western estimates.]
4. No one in the Kremlin knows the true figure of casualties because they have lost contact with some major divisions.
5. By June there will be no Russian economy left.

Before that time comes, the Russian leadership might resort to threatening Ukraine with nuclear terror to force an end to western sanctions.
To that end, the SVR, Russia’s foreign intelligence service, is preparing propaganda to claim that Ukraine itself has such weapons; this to be used as a pretext for a pre-emptive strike.

I can believe the FSB wasn't told about the invasion plans, since most of the invasion force didn't know either.

I sometimes wonder if this has all been an elaborate plan to trick Russia into invading Ukraine who we've armed with defense weapons but the offensive ones just to bleed the Russians out in the battlefield while we bleed them out in the finance world.

But that would give our leaders too much credit.

They aren't that smart.  Anyway too many variables at play to predict the outcome.  As it happens I think it's just a simple case that nobody had the guts to tell Putin the truth.

He expected Ukraine to welcome Russian troops as liberators.  They got javelins up the wazoo instead.  End of story.

You believe in this scenario Putin would just throw over the game board and just nuke everything because he's a sore loser?
No, but I think he will strike back, and then the limited engagement is going to turn anything but limited. And if that happens, the cat is out of the bag, and you don't know how they're gonna react if cornered.

Yeah but if we stop at Russia's border in Ukraine then we're hardly cornering them.
We're talking about reality.

If Ukraine has a no fly zone. That's Ukraine's business. They are a sovereign nation am I right?

So if Ruski's enter their air space, that's not us declaring an act of war. That's Russians

People have it the wrong way around.

The no fly zone being talked about is, uh, obviously NATO enforced. Ukraine already enforces some kind of no fly zone, it's called shooting down Russian planes. NATO enforcing a no fly zone means NATO shooting down Russian planes and getting into a war with Russia, and no amount of semantic contortions changes that.

One of the more level headed assessments of the situation.

I agree that of course Ukraine should go for peace if they can agree to the two "republics" breaking off and Crimea going to Russia (lets face it, they are never getting any of that back).  However is that deal even on the table?

That's what Peskov asked for, but also asked for Ukraine not joining NATO.

The deal I've heard is that Ukraine gives Crimea to Russia and recognizes Donbass as it's own country.  They add a constitutional amendment to stay neutral and they also disarm their country.

I really don't get the impression that this is a serious deal.  I think if they took this deal that Russia would immediately resume the invasion of Ukraine.

If it were just Crimea and Donbass, that still seems like a strange deal.  Russia more or less had those.  It would mean that this entire invasion yielded him nothing.  Maybe Putin would agree to this deal just to save face.

Russia did not "have" Donbass. It was a frozen (sometimes not so frozen) conflict where some territories were controlled by separatists and others weren't. Russia did have Crimea but it was not recognized as part of Russia which caused a number of short and especially long term issues. And obviously Ukraine not joining NATO is a key goal for them. It's far from yielding them nothing, it's what they probably wanted all along, except maybe they expected it would be much easier to get them.

Polling that indicates a slim majority of Russians support the invasion.  I know what you're thinking.  It's Kremlin propaganda.  But the article says this was done by an independent research agency in Russia and leaked to US based firm.  So it's possible that it's accurate.

46% firmly support
13% somewhat support
23% opposed
13% no opinion
6% on the fence

Yyyyeah I don't think many people would very easily say they are opposed to it right now. How do they know they're not being called by intelligence agencies?

And that's one of the biggest differences between Russia and the US.  No matter what problems the US has, fear of going to jail for saying that you oppose the government isn't one of them.
