I have recently found myself falling into the many rabbit holes that is YouTube, only to be disappointed, amused, saddened and curious. My greatest curiosity might just be, the flat earther. Motivation, psychological state, and without being hyperbolic, intelligence/education level. Now, these are nothing more than the observations of a laymen, undergrad level science and psych liberal artist.
The first thing that strikes me is the cock sureness of those making claims showing a less than high school understanding of the basic sciences, scientific principles, or even trying to. I had a teacher in HS on who's favorite t-shirt was written, "Science doesn't care what you believe". And it doesn't, because science has facts, provable facts to substantiate its claims. Through the literally hundreds of videos making claims of a flat earth, not one presented a verifiable fact. The vast majority were observations based on an inability to understand the scale of the world around them. Not seeing the arc of the planet, not grasping the distances in space etc. Others, dismiss that which they simply can't, don't, or won't understand. Ican relate to that part, I'm no mathematician, physicist, or astronomer, but I can think, for myself. When presented with factual evidence, I don't seek to make it fit my beliefs, I adjust my beliefs to fit the evidence. Perhaps flat earthers are prone to conspiracies, there is much evidence to support that, but if you are capable of functioning in society as a whole, you also possess the capacity to see beyond the irrational and just follow the facts, regardless of what it does to your beliefs. Science, true science, is not about the answer, it's about seeking knowledge and understanding. It's constantly evolving as more is learned. Bing 500 years behind something that evolves by the minute means you are missing so much about the understanding of the wonders around us.
